It may surprise you that Alienware started back in 1996. Two friends, bonded by their love of the extra-terrestrial and the world of gaming founded it together, giving the reason as their joint appreciation for the TV series The X Files. In case you were in any doubt of how much they love the show, you need look no further than the naming conventions that were used on the ranges of products they created, including some that, even with so many advances in technology, are still being used today. One example of this is Alienware Aurora.
After a successful ten years, Dell then took over Alienware. It did this though having its own range of gaming already established at this point. In fact, it actually held back this range to allow Alienware more success. Because of this, the brand that is Alienware has continued to grow in size and success. It is now not only specialised in gaming desktops but so much more, including monitors, laptops and a number of accessories that are all being sold within the Alienware brand,
Dell G Series
So, what exactly is this? The title doesn’t really give much away, does it? Well, the Dell G Series is a series of Dell models used for gaming. There are many models including the G3, G5, G7 and the G15. It is still quite a new series, and it has come into existence thanks to the success of the Dell Inspiron Gaming series PC’s.
But if they already had an extremely successful gaming series, why did they decide to create another? On the surface it could seem like a strange move, but it is easily explained. They did it for the same reason that other companies may make luxury items and basic items of the same product, or why an airplane might offer economy and first class for the same journey: they are trying to appeal to people with varying budgets. It means that those with a more limited budget can still access the product, albeit with less features than previous models. This meant that they could be competing in various levels of gaming products against rivals. One of their main rivals who could compete at all levels, both luxury and basic, was Acer.
Acer Predator Series
Now this is a range that has been around for a long time in the technology world. I’m sure you have all heard of the Acer Aspire range. The predator range came about from this range. But it made a big impact from the get-go. While most gaming ranges back then were quite basic and ordinary looking, the predator series was exciting and fresh and modern. They were a different design to the norm, with backlit accessories to make all your gaming friends jealous. It wasn’t easy for Acer, but they put in the work, and it paid off. They were able to deliver the same as the Alienware range as far as the spec was concerned, and yet they were able to keep the price lower, making it available to more people.
Acer Nitro Series
When Acer saw that their Predator range was successfully competing with Alienware, they decided to then also try their hand at a more budget range to appeal to a whole new audience and compete in that area too. This range became the Acer Nitro series and ok, it doesn’t have the same spec as the Predator range, but the price difference still makes it the one to choose for many who want the gaming technology without the higher price tag. For many games, it won’t make a difference anyway. But for some games, a little work may be needed to make it suitable.
What should you choose?
After all this discussion, the choice is yours to make. Obviously, the first thing to consider is what your budget will be. If you can afford a more luxury option, then your choice will be between Alienware and Predator. If you want a more budget option, then you will be looking to compare Dell G series with the Acer Nitro range. Once you are clear on price range, do some research for yourself into which one you would prefer. Of course, Dell and Acer are not the only options out there so you may not end up choosing either one. That is for you to decide.
Alan Gilmour, the Managing Director of Euro PC, said this:
