Magic 2014: Duels of the Planeswalkers, one of the most popular trading card games and adaptations on steam, has finally gotten its first expansion pack, with the extremely generic name of . Magic 2014 Expansion pack. Don’t let this slight lack luster name put you off of course, this adds a lot of extra content to your base game that will have you coming back to it if you have gotten bored of the single player.
This expansion brings a lot of new content including 6 new campaign levels for you to play, each against a planes walker, and will test your abilities of managing your deck and using it to its fullest extent. Each of these different levels will use different decks and different play styles that you will have to counter; they also allow you to unlock new decks and new cards. For the new cards there are 280 new cards to unlock and use in your decks, each can be obtained in either standard or foil variety and you can use the in game deck builder to make your perfect deck. Also if you play the physical magic the gathering card game you can test a deck you want to build and see how effective it is against the computer controlled opponents. There are also 5 new challenge levels that really let you try your wit against these, each one has a different challenge and honestly was too difficult for me to complete! Add all this with the extremely unforgiving AI, which I still hold cheats when it plays against you, you have an expansion that will easily keep you going for a while longer, or at least till the next expansion is out.
Of course the new expansion also supports the online multi player, allowing users who own the expansion pack to play together across the internet, something that makes playing Magic the gathering all together much easier.
If you enjoyed the base game of Magic 2014, this is a great expansion especially if you dislike the idea of buying the cards, and want to play with your friends; it’s a simple expansion that you rarely see now where it just adds more content. One niggle I have with it is that it is a little out the way to get to the new content, you have to specifically choose the expansion set instead of it being found with the other levels. Though this is a pretty simple expansion, for a very nice price, and should be on the radar of most magic fans, but there could have been a bigger amount of challenges added to keep the game interesting for longer, 4/5 for a solid, if short expansion.
