We all remember the good old prop hunt days on Gary’s Mod. Then a few other games over the years have taken that premise and have tried to put their spin on the concept but never really mastered or compared. The last one I played that tried this was Fortnite with a creative mode but it just wasn’t the same. Then one day, I stumbled across a clip on TikTok of someone saying about upcoming games in 2022, and this was how I found out about Midnight Ghost Hunt. I managed to enter into a closed beta weekend for the game was blown away by the pure joy I got from it, then I did my research and found out that it was hitting Steam early access this month and made it my mission to get a hold of a copy. This preview will cover the basics of the game, the current state and whether you should pick it up for yourself, spoilers alert you definitely should.
Midnight Ghost Hunt sees two teams of four go head-to-head in a chaotic struggle between the living and the dead. You will be able to play as both Ghost and Hunter as you either lie in wait or try to eliminate each other in a series of cursed locations. As a Ghost, you will do your best to try and hide from the Hunters. Whether that be as a harmless chair or anything that you can use to conceal yourself within. Not only this but you will have the joys of using your various abilities to aid you in trying to throw the Hunters of your cent or to throw various objects at them. The Ghost’s first objective is to try and last to midnight as this is the time when the Hunters become the Hunted. At midnight Ghosts become supercharged and seek to kill the Hunters before they have a chance to escape.
The Hunters will be armed with an arsenal of ghoul-busting tech that will allow them to locate, kill and banish the Ghosts to another realm. Your main goal as the Hunter is to try and eliminate the Ghosts before Midnight so that you have the upper hand in defeating them before they go supercharged. Some of my favourite weapons to use are the Project X gun and the Salt Shotgun, the gadgets, and perks that you equip to your loadout mean that you can find a playstyle that suits you and your team.
Communication is key, I had a lot more fun playing with premade teams or a team that was talking. You can strategies more and really get a good little plan going. When you are Hunters having communication is a good way to be able to build your team so that everyone isn’t using the same thing and that you can track down the Ghosts more efficiently. I have won more games when I play with a team that talks than that of teams that just do their own thing.
The game consists of two rounds, one where you play as the Ghost and then one where you play as the Hunter. This is good as you get to play on a map as both Ghost and Hunter before it moves on to the next one. So far from what I have played the community in this game is super friendly and funny. I have made a few new friends along the way and I can spend hours gaming without feeling the need to come away from it. This game is so much fun, the abilities that the Ghosts have are so cool. I love being able to use the Doppelganger ability to copy a nearby hunter and make them think that I am one of them. Not only this but the Haunt abilities allow you to push objects, shove hunters and distract them which when combined with your team can make it really hard for the Hunters to actually find you and kill you. Midnight Ghost Hunt also comes with a few different Hunter Skins and Ghost skins that give you that extra unique feel when you are playing in matches. There are loads of different load-outs that you can try and each one comes with its benefits and playstyle. All the maps I have played on are incredibly balanced and enjoyable with my favourite being the Asylum one, the theatre is good but the Asylum one gives it that spooky feel which suits the game. There are emotes, victory poses, and more currently available and what is even better is that all the in-game cosmetics and items can be purchased with in-game shards that you earn by simply playing, I don’t know about you but I love this so much as I’m getting tired of having to buy skins all the time. The fact that you play and get rewarded for doing so is a very good feature and maybe big AAA companies should learn a thing or two. I’m not saying that down the line this game won’t have microtransaction but for now, it doesn’t.
Now that I have built up a friends list of people who are regular players, I find myself playing Midnight Ghost Hunt more and more. Even though it is the same thing over and over, it doesn’t get boring, and it doesn’t feel repetitive. I think it is because it does a good job at offering multiple weapons, abilities, and other maps to make each round feel different and when you play against other people their playstyles are different so no two games feel the same. I enjoy it more when playing with my close friends, as we have made this are go-to game now rather than Fortnite. It feels refreshing and new even though there are similar things to it already on the market, though Vaulted Sky Games have made something that I believe could be one of the best games to be released in 2022.
Closing Statement
For a game that is in early access, it feels polished and complete. I have spent hours playing virtual hide-and-seek and will be playing many more as this breath of fresh air keeps me hooked for hours on end. I love the map designs; the Ghost and Hunter skins and the mechanics just work really well. There are some teething problems but the developers are working hard to make sure that we are given the best gaming experience possible and I’m super sold on how simple the game is and just how well it plays. To make it even better it is currently only £15.49, which is super affordable and I would honestly say it is worth every penny. Some AAA games come out at £69.99 nowadays and don’t feel as polished and as enjoyable as Midnight Ghost Hunt does. That being said I would love to see what else they have played for the game, it would be awesome to see it make its way to console but for now, I’m comfortable playing it on my PC and watching this game’s community grow as well as it’s a success. I will be following its journey up till release so you might get some updates along the way. For now, Midnight Ghost Hunt can have a well-deserved score of 9 out of 10 for being this gamer’s new favourite PC game.
