If you’ve been under a rock for the past couple of hours, you’ve probably got hit by a stray boulder thrown by Rajang, a newly added monster for MHW: Iceborne’s expansion. This makes the total number of monsters added with the expansion alone to 27 and a grand total of 64 monsters available through the entire game.
With the October Update, it also added a couple of other extras from a new zone in the Guiding Lands that imitates a volcanic area, the first batch of layered armor based on already known armor pieces from monsters such as the Great Jagras, Great Girros, Radobaan, Rathian, Tobi-Kadachi, Paolumu, Pukei-Pukei among a few others, game adjustments and some quality of life improvements to make for better hunts.
To start the hunt for the furious ape-shit monster, players will be tasked by the admiral to investigate a Kirin with its shattered horn in Hoarfrost Reach. After the hunt, you will then be assigned a special assignment against the ape itself within the new volcanic area of the Guiding Lands after viewing a cutscene involving Kirin getting hurled a boulder from across the room and eventually having its horn snapped by Rajang’s bare fists.
The fight itself is a straightforward slugfest with the monster’s fast movement, sweeping attacks, dives, and a Kamehameha for good measure. Even with the Palico’s Shieldspire Stooge that is used for attracting the monster’s attention is often not enough to keep it at bay due to the nature of its attacks that the dummy would be destroyed far faster than any other monster would. Thankfully enough, he gets into brawls often with other monsters in the area such as the Azure Rathalos and the Savage Deviljho roaming the Guiding Lands.
The monster itself inflicts thunder blight and is only weak to Ice with a one-star to water. Once in rampage mode, it’s also capable of deflecting attacks directed at its huge meaty arms so it’s advisable to focus on his shiny booty and the tail when it unleashes its Super Saiyan form.
Once beaten, hunters will be able to craft its armour with the Beta set providing Resentment 5, Weakness Exploit 3, and Attack Boost 1 and the Alpha set increases the Attack Boost to 2 while adding Handicraft 5 and Speed Sharpening 2 aside from the 2-set bonus of Mind’s Eye/Ballistics and 4-set bonus of Protective Polish. Meanwhile, its weapon provides a high attack stat, a jewel 4 slot, but has a low thunder stat value, negative affinity and has a base sharpness of blue that can only go up to white. It does, however, make for an extremely good looking weapon with the greatsword turning into more of a spikey club and the dual blades turn into a spikey gauntlet with horns at its sides.
Some of the notable adjustments and improvements included in the update involve an expanded weapon augmentation and custom upgrades. Extra Slots on weapons now go up to three levels to put more freedom into experimenting on augments. Players will also be able to make their personal room public to other players in the lobby. The Guiding Lands now include an option to make their personal progress static meaning if you’re running through random monster hunts for their exclusive material drops, you won’t have to worry about regions increasing and decreasing levels.
Monster Hunter World’s Iceborne expansion is available worldwide for both PS4 and Xbox One with PC coming later in 2020. Stay tuned for more updates coming in for both November and December 2019.
