So you’ve been reading One Piece for the last 15 years, you’ve watched the anime too, you’ve seen all the filler and all the times the author has been ill and had to put issues on hold, and your now sitting here waiting for him to finish. Everyone wants to know who will win, will the crew get the Flame Flame Fruit and will Law help Luffy, and when will Nami’s tits become bigger than her head finally, some will have answers, others may not. So at some point everyone will have heard about One Piece, even if you haven’t watched an episode or read an issue you, and if not well they are all a bunch of pirates, some have special powers and others do not and strength ranges from meek to good lord what are you made from.
So you have this weird and fantastic world, and a very, very long back story, but thankfully this isn’t another retelling of the same first couple arc’s like is usually released, (Looking at you here dragon ball). But this is a brand new story written by the author, so you won’t get any bad fan fiction esc story line like you sometimes might find, which is nice. So your crew has been kidnapped, Luffy has gone to rescue them, with the help of a little raccoon thing called Pato, who can bring drawings to life, not sure which Devil fruit this one has eaten racoon…doodle fruit…yeah that one.
There is also the coliseum mode, which sees your chosen character pitted against groups of enemies whose sole desire seems to be to smash your pretty little face up. As you would expect the further you go through this mode the tougher and stronger your foes become, until you either admit defeat to your enemies or arrive at the other end, a fantastic victor, and probably feeling quite chuffed with yourself.
Graphically the game looks amazing, I mean sure some people might be sick of cell shaded graphics, but there isn’t much other styles that really give the feel of it being animated, all the character’s look as they do in the manga and Anime, you can tell a lot of love has been put into this game. One of the most impressive parts is the areas you fight in in the game, you can really get a sense of the pride put in this game, and the areas look amazing, and really feel like they do in the series. Particularly Punk Hazard, it really does feel like they took a step back and tried to recreate the area as it would be, with key places what feels like the right distances away from each other. Of course you won’t get the full feel of this if you’re using the wii u’s game pad, the lower resolution can make things a little more difficult to enjoy, but it’s all still there.
Combat is another high point, though if you are a fan of Pirate Warriors 2 that was released last year, don’t expect as much fluidity that was found in that game, here you have a more 3D brawler style, if you ever got to play Platinum’s games fantastic Anarchy Reigns, it works similarly. Each character however does feel completely different, and whilst I enjoyed playing with Luffys rubber swinging arms, but switching to Franky’s attacks made me have to switch temps a little, but not too much. So if you have always wanted to go along with Franky’s fantastic attacks (SUUUUUPPPPER) or Zoro’s unique three sword fighting style, you will have different time playing as each. On that point though, if you are coming from Pirate Warriors, you may be disappointed in the collection of playable character’s, or more so lack thereof. You have the full cast of Luffys crew, and a collection of enemy pirates, but it isn’t as comprehensive as Pirate warriors collection of characters was.
One Piece Unlimited world red is a fantastic game, and for fans of the series, will really set itself apart with its accurate portrayal of the games areas and character’s. Sure there the fighting may be a little boring compared to Pirate warriors, but that doesn’t stop this game being extremely fun and one of those great games to play for the series is based in, not to mention some sweet cross save for Wii u and 3DS going on which is a nice bonus. If you’re a big fan of the series, you will love this game pure and simple, but even If you are not, there is enough here to keep you playing and enjoying the combat system, plus the story to keep you interested. For all this lovely fan service, and not the other kind, I give this game a well-deserved 5/5.
