Just under one year ago, the Project Spark community put its first foot forward on its creation journey. Since October, our public launch, we have been breaking barriers on what is possible with creation. But where is this journey taking us?
I’m here to talk about where we are today, set the stage for where we’re going, and make some big announcements along the way.
Phase 1: Inspire Creators
Our first mission, as soon as we opened the gates to Project Spark, was to inspire creators. For the past year, we’ve done this in a number of ways. We developed creations that show you Project Spark’s capabilities. We produced Crossroads, a mix between game and game-maker. We created episodic, story-driven experiences that show you how you can tell your own story. We held Project Spark GameJams with big stakes and big prizes. We launched the Project Spark Tour that has significantly increased our engagement with new entrants to our community. We continue to create content packs aimed at the wish fulfillment of our creators. Today, we have nearly 3 million installs of Project Spark and our community has shared over 150,000 creations, which have been played nearly 15 million times.
Phase 2: Creators Inspire a Community
We knew we’d get to a point where the content our creators make is so good that they are in a position to inspire others. We are getting to that point now. Our focus, now, will be on the creation tools and resources you will need to inspire others. This means that some of our play experiences will be deprioritized. One of those is Champions Quest. Episode 2 and all future episodes of Champions Quest have been cancelled to allow our team to work on more creation-focused features.
We are working on a lot of promising creation tools. I can’t guarantee we will deliver everything you have requested. We will hit on some top requests and some things you never thought we’d do. You are at the core of this Project Spark story. We’re going to empower you by drawing in broader audiences to your creations and by making creation easier.
You have given us consistent feedback on our business model and amongst the first thing we’re going to do, is to make our marketplace simpler.
All Content in One Edition
Project Spark is, and as far as I can tell you, will always be a free download. That was a very important thing for our team and for our early adopters on the Xbox One and Windows platforms. We wanted to lower the barrier to entry. Anyone could download it. Anyone could try it out. Anyone could be a creator.
Outside of this, we’ve released content packs with additional props and features. We wanted to put out new content in a steady stream, setting pricing that reflected our team’s time and effort. Today, there are close to 40 content packs available in our marketplace.
Today, we’ll also be rolling out a Realms Series bundle for 3,000 tokens ($29.99 USD) with all fantasy content, an updated Galaxies Series bundle for 2,000 tokens ($19.99 USD) with all sci-fi content and a Creator Series bundle for 2,000 tokens ($19.99) with all Builder Packs.
Spark Premium is another avenue we’ve taken a second look at. With our move to a monthly schedule of content releases, we need a new Premium plan that reflects this. Starting today, you will have two ways to get Spark Premium. Purchase 3 Months + 10 Upload Slots for 1,500 tokens ($14.99 USD) or 1 Year + 50 Upload Slots for 55,000 tokens ($54.99 USD).
What about the core creators that already have most of this content?
Free Premium for Core Creators
We’re excited to have great offers like I mentioned above. But what about the creators that have already spent the time unlocking our content?
Every creator that has spent over $40, logged over 150 hours, or received over 10,000 downloads will receive 3 Months of Spark Premium, including 10 additional Upload Slots for free within the next few days.
If you fit into one of those three categories, congratulations you’re a core creator! Every creator in this group has done so much for Project Spark this past year and we are grateful for your inspiration.
More Benefits to Free Players
The free core content of Project Spark will also be getting an update. We’ve wanted to add more content for our free players that will help inspire creation. Starting today, we will be adding the following content packs to the core content for all users:
- Keys to the Castle
- Nomadic Warrior
- Gifts & Lights
- Clovers & Gold
- Champions Quest: Void Storm
If you didn’t previously own these content packs before, you will find them automatically unlocked for you today! These updates will add more than 50 props to your creation gallery.
All of this comes just ahead of Windows 10, which works great with Project Spark. If you ever have any questions or Project Spark suggestions, we’re always listening. Whether it’s Twitter, Twitch, Forums, Fan Sites or Facebook, we’re here.
There are a lot of announcements here, so if you have any questions, read our FAQs forum thread with additional details on all marketplace updates.
