Ravenswatch from Developer Passtech Games and Publisher Nacon is an Early-Access title available on Steam that builds upon the successes of Passtech’s previous hit title, Curse of the Dead Gods.
This time around Passtech Games have opted to focus on a game that can be played both solo or co-operatively with up to 4 players. Players will choose from 1 of 4 different characters and be thrust into a world filled with monsters to defeat. Hacking and slashing awaits.
Nightmares are spreading within the world of Reverie and you’re tasked with taking them out. As time passes in the world though, a day night cycle occurs and this affects not only the monsters at large but your characters too. For example, one of the characters can transform into a werewolf when nighttime occurs. Each of the characters play quite differently and you’ll have to get used to each of their unique abilities by giving them all a try.
Ravenswatch is a roguelite at its core and as such, you will die. A lot. Players shouldn’t be discouraged though because as you defeat enemies and rack up experience points, you’ll be able to slowly upgrade your characters with new perks and abilities which make taking on tougher foes a lot easier.
At the start of the game, you’ll be quite weak and if you’re playing co-op, you’ll have to really work together with your teammates to take down the tougher armoured foes out there. You definitely should not rush straight into boss fights but rather, should be exploring the map looking for smaller fry to pick off and for items so you can upgrade yourself.
Survive long enough out in the world, gain enough power and you’ll be able to take on a tentacled boss enemy nightmare. This boss fight is quite challenging though so you’d best be prepared before attempting to defeat it.
Since this is an Early-Access title, the content in the game right now is quite lacking but over time, more will be added and this is already shaping up to be a solid game. All the core features already seem to be in place and the game is rather polished already. Yes it’s lacking content right now but what we have available is still extremely enjoyable and extremely polished. The game runs smoothly and hasn’t crashed at all – Which is a rarity in Early-Access games these days.
Ravenswatch is a hack and slash action adventure roguelite that has a lot of potential. If you’ve enjoyed games like Risk of Rain 2, Hades, Titan Quest and Diablo 3, this game will appeal to you. It’s filled with a lot of good gameplay mechanics and it’s most importantly, fun to play. Defeating enemies feels satisfying and while there isn’t much available right now, what we do have is great and we can’t wait to see more from Passtech Games over time.
Definitely keep an eye on this title. It’s going to be a hit when it’s fully released.
