Riptide GP: Renegade which was developed by Vector Unit drops players into a futuristic world of illicit hydro jet racing, where armoured riders kick out death-defying stunts over massive waterfalls, outrun cops, and boost at breakneck speeds across surging waves. With a deep career mode and both split-screen and online multiplayer, Riptide GP: Renegade is the first game in the popular racing series designed especially for modern consoles.
The Riptide GP series has been a mainstay on mobile platforms for a number of years now, but Renegade is the first in the series to be built specifically for consoles, but from making the jump from mobile to console which is quite a big step forward. The game starts out with you a competitive racer who competes in an illegal race which ends in catastrophe in the form of being caught and arrested by the police which in this game is the most infuriating part of the game, but besides that there is a bit more to it than that as your rider has developed a bitter rivalry with another competitor who gets your rider sent to prison for two years. After release, your guy swears revenge.
Nothing has been added nor taken away; this is both good and bad, the tracks have all been expertly designed and are as diverse as you could hope for, including a range of effects such as a thunderstorm, naval battle and a theme park. Even though the games includes many game modes such as Elimination, Freestyle, Race and, the newest edition to the series which is the Slalom game mode, nine tracks spread out over 118 events in the career mode. Over these events, you have the opportunity to create some sort of background story for your character which doesn’t just involve “a racer going to the top of his respected profession”
The previous game in the series was a straight port from mobile, and it certainly looked like one. Renegade, on the other hand, being designed specifically for consoles does look a lot better. The water effects are impressive, especially when hitting some of the bigger waves, and all this is presented at 60 frames per second, even in split screen. That in itself is certainly a step up for the series. So yeah the graphics do work very well with the game and story line. What makes the game irritating is the police you encounter will blatantly ignore every other competitor and single you out regardless of your position in the race. It feels like the music also fits very well within the game, always sitting well with the cut scenes and racing, the voice acting, on the other hand, was very basic and boring but that doesn’t hinder the fun to be had within the game and modes it offers you.
Overall I found the game to be almost 100% satisfactory, and was so easy to get into which is why I found it so enjoyable it’s such a basic game but it offers so much for what it is and what it entails, if you’re a racing game fan but want something different from the normal car racing game this is the game to buy, it also made me feel like this is what racing could really be like in the distant future because you can really make it feel like it’s you in the race rather than the character you’re playing. So to be honest I would recommend this game to anyone looking for something simple and yet very well put together and presented.
Overall I enjoyed the whole game besides the fact that the police are made to hound you and you only and the lack of tracks, but this game deserves an 8/10 with some areas that could do with improvement such as the voice acting but that’s not as important as gameplay and story.
