The Ship of Heroes team is shifting into testing mode with their recent community event, and with new content being player-tested. This video shows the first, rough test of a city-wide event called Riot at the Arches. It speaks well for the devs that they are willing to show their first attempt in a video.
The SoH devs have agreed that this is rough content, and that they are code testing with a few willing players. Another version of this riot was so difficult that not only were the players all killed, the devs were also killed despite being in God Mode, and the server crashed. That’s one powerful boss!
In the riot, enemies appear in successively more difficult waves. The number and level of enemies is now triggered by the number and level of heroes in the immediate area of the riot, just before it begins. Devs have the ability to increase or decrease difficulty on the fly. In this video, difficulty for the final boss was high, but for the first wave was much easier.
This is an internal video, not a polished marketing piece. This particular riot had never been tested with more than two heroes before. One of the things the devs were looking for in the test was unexpected interaction of powers such as buffs and debuffs with larger crowd of heroes. And they found it. We’re told that after this event, their code team has spent more than a week searching for two classes of unplanned interactions, with eventual success.
The next big thing from Ship of Heroes is supposed to be an invasion test, which will be notably bigger than this riot. The devs are hoping to attract at least 30 testers into a single big battle, and to repeat it multiple times. As always, the SoH dev team will adjust the content and difficulty to the expectations of the community, but it seems they don’t mind have a few raid-wipes along the way.
Ship of Heroes has conducted five successful alpha and beta tests: one in 2017, two in 2018, a major character creator Beta in 2019 and their open community event a few weeks ago in 2020. The next big test with their community will be an invasion or raid test, planned for the next few months.
