Tales from the Borderlands is another game developed by Telltale Games in their line of Episode Point-and-click adventure games, following in the steps of The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us. With the companies rise to popularity of late they have taken upon themselves to create several different games within the same time span, with a Minecraft Telltale game being announced just recently people have seen a link to this and the quality of rushed products. Is Tales from the Borderlands affected by the increase in workload?
Story
This is a review of Episode 3, for episode 2 go here, or for episode 1 go here
Starting with a rather explosive retreat, the gang of would-be vault hunters escape from the trap laid by Vasquez and August with Gortys in hand, several events occur at this point where you previous choices will affect and will give you a few seconds to decide quite a few fates. From escaping the Old Haven Facility the party go out on the look for more parts to Gortys.
Pointing the party in the correct direction they set off in their trailer yet again, Gortys in hand and a montage ahead. After a while Rhys will have a sit-down talk with Handsome Jack about their situation together, your decisions prior affecting his dialogue and attitude towards you. Ending with a final question about your trust for him you will arrive at the next location. The group continues on their way into an Atlas terraforming facility where the upgrade part is located, and through several investigative sections you find you way to its location.
Playing through the third episode took around 2hours, the next time it was around 1.5 on my alternate run of the game and its choices.
Gameplay
Gameplay in episode 3 took a big jump in its action sections, half of the time spent in areas had you doing quick choices or βbattleβ segments which really added to the sense that youβre being hunted by 3 different forces. Decisions were a lot more definite in this episode, seeing the reaction to them almost immediately, either through killing a character off or having a scene cut short due to your response.
The whole episode seemed to improve on all aspects of Gameplay, conversations were a lot smoother and you had a lot more choice in the way you went about doing certain actions. At times it was unclear how you were meant to deal with a situation, ending with some trial and error, but this was overcome once you understood the mechanisms.
Overall Thoughts and Feelings
Choices meant so much more in this episode, past choices were shown to have more impact and lead on into this episode and there were immediate events after making decisions. I kind of wished for a bit more talking or inter-party development in this episode but there was plenty of optional chances for you to get to know one another, with a slight hint at some romance.
Overall, Tales From The Borderlands Episode 3 gets a 4/5, almost all aspects were improved, the party talked more together and the action was amped up exponentially. Sadly you can have a character out for the entire episode which is kind of saddening if they are your favourite. There were still some parts that were off, either due to pacing. Dialogue or lengthening the sequence with slowed down parts.
