A year ago I reviewed the base Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge game. The game was a tonne of fun and now, we have a straightforward, affordable DLC available which does a lot for the game’s longevity.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Shredder’s Revenge Dimension Shellshock adds 2 new playable characters to the game as well as a brand new “Survival Mode”.
Dimension Shellshock
Dimension Shellshock introduces Usagi and Karai to the fray. Both of these characters are well-known Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise characters and it’s great to see them now become playable. Dotemu have also graciously allowed these two character to be playable in the main story mode too and not just limited to the Survival Mode.
The fact that Usagi and Karai are playable in the main story and arcade mode means that there’s not even more longevity added to the already hefty replay value intense base Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge game. Even if you’ve already got through the story, playing through it again with either Usagi or Karai makes for quite an enjoyable experience since both of these new characters play out quite differently to the others.
Karai for example has an extremely powerful special attack which can clear waves of enemies in no time. Usagi’s special attack is also quite strong but is more focused. If you’re playing the game cooperatively with friends, this means that you can have different play strategies by creating combos with your respective characters that play into their strengths and weaknesses.
Yes it is standard fare for any self-respecting video game that adds additional characters but it just feels so satisfying to use either Karai or Usagi in the game since they are both so powerful at dispatching hordes of Foot Ninjas. The only major gripe I have with this DLC is that it doesn’t add a tonne of story to the game but then again, it never said it would…
Survival of the fittest
The Survival mode in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge Dimension Shellshock adds a lot of content to the game that will keep you hooked. Players will traverse various dimensions collecting crystals after defeating enemies. Collect enough crystals and you’ll be able to upgrade your characters, making them far more powerful than they already are. This is key to victory since the levels in Survival mode can be quite tough.
In addition to this, players will also be able to unlock new character colours which adds a layer of customization to the game. At the end of a survival mode level, you’ll also be given the choice of a power up. These can be vials that transform you into a different character or can be something else such as a food item which restores health.
Transforming into another character is great and you can even turn into the Shredder and wreak havoc in the next level with your fearsome abilities. This was honestly such a great surprise and a really nice touch from the developers!
Graphically, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge Dimension Shellshock looks every bit as great as the base game did and the survival mode levels really do pay homage to some of the greatest TMNT moments. If you’re a hardcore fan of the franchise, this will definitely appeal to you even more than it would to casual gamers. The soundtrack is also just as great with Tee Lopes crafting some banger music tracks for the game.
Final Verdict
If you’ve already played Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge and enjoyed it, grab this DLC and enjoy it again but with a different character. It’s really such a great DLC that while still a bit light on content, adds just enough for its price point to keep you busy for quite a long time to come. If you can, play this game cooperatively with friends. It’s just so much more fun that way!
