For as long as I can remember Tekken was always my go-to fighting game and soon we shall; have Tekken 8. I have over the years ventured into others like Mortal Kombat, Soul Calibur, and Super Smash Bros but I will always have a special place for Tekken. I remember playing it back on the PlayStation 1 following it through its main storylines and seeing new and exciting fighters being added to the roster.
My go-to fighters were King and Yoshimitsu but in the more recent games, I found myself using Devil Jin and Lars but still expanding my on finding fighters that I enjoy playing. When the New Tekken game was revealed I was super hyped since Tekken 7 was released back in 2017. A month before the release date I came across news that there would be a demo available for Tekken 8. I installed it instantly and eagerly waited for the download to finish so that I could look at what was on offer in Tekken 8.
Understandable with it being a demo there was only a selection of things available. I was able to play through a segment of the campaign “The Dark Awakens” Chapter 1, a segment of the new arcade mode, and countless offline matches against AI or local players. There were four fighters available these being Jin, Kazuya, Paul, and Nina. Even though there were only four fighters this was enough for me to be able to sink my teeth into the demo and get a taste of Tekken 8’s style.
If you have never played Tekken before (Which would mean you’d been living under a rock for years) this is a small taster to show you what to expect from one of the best fighting games on the market.
It was nice to be able to see the new gameplay firsthand, I did manage to get a quick look at it when I went to i71 but it was nice to be able to play it in the living room and on the go thanks to my PlayStation Portal. Visually this must be the best Tekken to date.
The environments are dynamic and destructible, and the attacks are stunning to watch both as a player and as a spectator. They have done a fantastic job of capturing the intense fighting that we have loved from the series. We are still able to do Rage Arts and signature moves and combos that have been in Tekken but do take advantage of the new Heat System as it gives you the ability to harness offensive attacks with special movement and fighter-based abilities. These are unique to each fighter and are again a visual to watch.
The fighting feels polished and fluent and I enjoy the new gameplay features as it allows Tekken 8 to flourish while playing it on the PlayStation 5. The environments are incredible and the small cutscenes I saw from playing the one chapter of the story made it look like something out of Hollywood. Tekken 8 will be fully released on the 26th of January 2024 but until then I will continue to jump into the demo and get the practice in before the big day.
Conclusion
After spending a good amount of time in the demo I can happily say that the 26th January 2024 can’t come quick enough. I can’t wait to have full access to the 32 fighters, the story, and the ability to fight it out online. The new features implemented make for some spectacular fights and killer combos. The next-gen visuals are incredible, and I love how the four fighters play out in the demo.
From what I played of the campaign segment it is visually stunning and looks to be another great entry story-wise for the franchise and the Arcade mode will add more single-player elements to the game and a good introduction to the gameplay of Tekken 8 which is always welcomed. All in all, this looks like it will be another amazing entry in this legendary franchise and I can’t wait to see what the full game has in store for us when the demo showed so little but offered so much in terms of an insight of what’s to come.
