For the last 16 years of my life I’ve been playing games and wow haven’t games changed? I remember it like it was yesterday, sitting there playing my Game Boy Colour on the couch and even the first day I was able to play a Play Station 1 around my mates house.
Over these 16 years I have played my fair share of games though it hit me today that many of those games I used to enjoy I will probably not play again for a long time… or at all. As a kid the three main games series I grew up on were Pokémon, The Legend of Zelda and Sly Cooper, and these are the only three series I still play today.
With the release of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time coming round the corner for us in the United Kingdom I have been enjoying Sly Cooper, Sly Cooper 2 and Sly Cooper 3 in their glorious HD remake. Though the thing I realised whilst I played these games was that the only reason I could honestly say I enjoy them now is from the nostalgia they bring back. Pokémon is also kind of similar. I love the games honestly do not get me wrong it is just that as the games are continuing I am wondering whether I am playing them because I actually enjoy the series or because I like reliving the feeling it is to collect that starter ‘mon for the first time and continue out on a great adventure.
Some of you may be thinking, but you mentioned three games series? Yes the third games series The Legend of Zelda is an odd one! I can very easily say that I love the series and still do. If you were to throw me any of The Legend of Zelda games that I had played after Ocarina of Time (my entry point into the series!) I could easily say why I enjoy that game… and it isn’t due to nostalgia. I don’t know what it is with the series but it just has such an immersive world, which has drawn me in, and got me engaged – and I am not complaining for one moment! Over the last two years I’ve started to collect all of the games on their original consoles to make my own collection of sorts, and it is coming together very nicely if I do say so myself.
Though to get back to the point I was going to make, I believe everyone out there has one series (or even one game) that they can always fall back to no matter what. You may be planning to get the new Tomb Raider game within the next week, though I bet you that game you say is your favourite… you will fall back to when you’ve finished with Tomb Raider. It really is a great thing to have, and it is great discussing it with people and seeing what games you have in common.
