How serious are you about battling climate change? While most scientists agree that climate change is real, we have some governments across the world wondering as to whether its effects are something to be concerned about. The lackadaisical approach might be doing us more harm than good, and that’s what Fortnite wants to bring to attention.
Fortnite’s Take on Climate Change
Fortnite is the most popular game in the work right now. And if you haven’t heard of it let me officially welcome you back to civilization. Fortnite is a game that sees hundreds of player fight for survival. Even if you love playing other games like Betway88 eSports betting, we are sure you are concerned about the state of the planet.
Fortunately, a group of scientists have seen the popularity of this game and decided to use it to their advantage. They have decided to use it as a platform to talk about climate change.
In this day and age, most millennials are interested in climate. Some have even resorted to living a green lifestyle. For instance, in the US, 70% of Americans are interested in climate but they fail to have a platform to talk about it.
The whole idea was brought up in July by Katharine Hayhoe who is a climate scientist. She noticed that her 11-year-old first person Fortnite videos were getting about 10,000 likes. On the other hand, her webinars were only getting a thousand likes. Her tweet prompted the Fortnite Climate Squad.
The Climate Fortnite Squad was formed by an MIT graduate student Henri Drake. He tweeted the idea and got about twenty climate scientists and science communicators. The squad was formed and since then they have been playing Fortnite twice a week.
They stream Fortnite twice a week in Twitch. They talk about climate change like how ice age works and luckily they get other gamers to stream in. It is an entertaining approach that attracts other gamers to join in the chat. One minute they are talking about climate politics while the next they are discussing the game.
Drake and his squad have ended up getting a lot of support from other climate scientists and climate communications community. Although the Climate Fortnite Squad sole aim is to attract more gamers.
The streaming is new to them but it is clear that Drake and his squad are making an impact. One of the goals of the squad is to branch into other games and get more climate scientist in the squad. For instance, if they get more scientists, it would be easier to stream daily and reach out to many more gamers.
However, it is not always that serious on the platform. Although their goal is to talk about climate change they do have fun playing Fortnite. They got to celebrate their first win just last week.
What do you think about this move by Fortnite to help bring in more awareness to a topic as important as climate change?
