So The Expanse A Telltale Series episode 3 is our halfway point in this truly spectacular series so far. While it may be the shortest in length out of the 3 released episodes so far, it makes up for that by being crammed full of exposition and emotional beats.
So let’s take a look into ‘The Expanse A Telltale Series Episode 3: The First Ones’ .
The episode starts right where we left off at the end of The Expanse A Telltale Series episode 2 with the crew of the Artemis stumbling across a mysterious Belter station built into an asteroid.
A lot of the choices you made in the last 2 episodes come to a bit of a head here which impacts on quite a few sections of this episode. Due to past choices I made, Drummer chose Maya to come with her and explore the station, a choice Rayen took strong notice too.
Once inside the station, things start to get a bit strange. The place is completely devoid of life and littered with stasis coffins filled with the bodies of the station’s past inhabitants. You learn a bit about what happened here through audio logs and data logs that you find around the station. Ultimately you learn that this mysterious treasure you have been hunting for is in fact a bio weapon of truly horrific power.
Drummer convinces Maya that the weapon needs to be destroyed in order to protect the belt. However, things then took a very drastic and emotional turn at this point and one sequence of events played out which I was not expecting at all. I was left shocked and speechless once the credits for this episode began to roll. I truly have no idea where the story is going to go next, which is a rather exciting aspect as it’s not predictable like most games these days, and in true Telltale fashion, it keeps you hooked and wanting more.
Gameplay-wise the layout for this episode is a bit more confined and closed in as opposed to the wide open spaces of the previous episodes. With this being entirely set on the Belter station there are a lot of walkable paths to use so you don’t need to float around in zero-g as much.
This is a nice change of pace as it balances the zero-g and normal movement sections a bit more equally compared to the previous episodes. The zero-g sections now feel more warranted by using your thruster pack to float down elevator shafts or other inaccessible areas.
A new feature to the gameplay in The Expanse A Telltale Series Episode 3 is a small but simple puzzle section where you must connect power conduits together down the elevator shaft to be able to open the airlock at the bottom in order to move onto the next section. As I say, it’s a simple puzzle, however, one that requires you to do a few spins in zero-g to work out which direction the next power conduit is in in order to turn it on and connect up the power.
Overall The Expanse A Telltale Series Episode 3 is a brilliant change of pace and a great midway point for this five-part series. It dishes out some great character conflicts and powerful choices that lead to rather emotional outcomes depending on which choice you decide upon.
Let’s see what happens next in the penultimate episode, ‘The Expanse A Telltale Series Episode 4: Impossible Objects‘ out on September 7th.
