The Legend of Heroes Trails into Reverie is the culmination of the other 3 games of the series, Trails to the Sky, Trails from Zero, and Trails of Cold Steel. Just like the others,
The Legend of Heroes Trails into Reverie is a turn-based RPG with a few new perks and changes to its system. This game does mark the end of the arcs for both the Crossbell and Erebonia groups. The events and actions do become the precursor to something big coming along in Kuro no Kiseki.
A game that has yet to be released in the West, but fans of the series already know about it. Developed by Nihon Falcom and published by NIS America, this game has so many callbacks from each of its predecessors and the way it was executed was beautiful. The rush I got from watching every person and group that I’ve had been watching them learn and grow for almost the last 20 years.
Fighting alongside everyone again from Sky to Cold Steel in one huge game rather than going through who knows how many games to get this kind of thing and they pulled it off in the most amazing way possible. Making the groups I always wanted to create and giving them team names.
Welcome to the land of waifus and husbandos. Where magic is real, advanced tech is real, but even I feel like they could reach a new level of …HOLY CRAP IS THAT UNICORN THAT BIGGER THAN MY HOUSE!?!?
You’ll be going through the perspectives of Lloyd, the leader of the Crossbell’s Special Support Section and the protagonist of Zero, Rean, a teacher and the Ashen Chevalier and the protagonist of Cold Steel and our mysterious new member of the group known only as “C”, the leader of the Reborn Imperial Liberation Front that is doing a few things in the background that does affect both Lloyd’s and Rean’s story along the way.
Throughout The Legend of Heroes Trails into Reverie, your goal is to not only help liberate Crossbell from the remaining imperials that currently have Crossbell by their grip, but also it seems that Prince Olivert and his wife have gone missing with Rean’s group having been assigned to locate the two and make sure they’re safe. With the ever-increasing number of party members and the many combinations of builds, you can form and command.
There are a lot of strategies in The Legend of Heroes Trails into Reverie while going into battle, during battle, and re-entering battle after either getting a party wipe or from force closing the game and treating it like you know the proper build and not just because you feel like you’ve wasted a lot of time and items on something you feel you didn’t need to have used.
The Legend of Heroes Trails into Reverie starts 5 months later after the events that transpired at the end of the Great Twilight event in Trails of Cold Steel IV. The Legend of Heroes Trails into Reverie has you going from not 1 group, not 2 groups, but 3 different groups. 2 of the groups are the gangs from Sky, Zero and Cold Steel. The newest group to grace this large stage for the future of all of Erebonia is “C” who’s an enigmatic soul claiming to be the leader of the Reborn Imperial Liberation Front.
Lloyd’s group is busy trying to free Crossbell from Rufus Albarea, who is claiming to be the Supreme Leader and wants to have the entire world become a part of the Crossbell Unified Nation. Meanwhile, Rean and his students are on vacation in his home village Ymir. This is interrupted by the former king of Erebonia Matteus Vander coming to Rean because it seems his son Prince Olivert and his wife have gone missing. Rean takes the request and is given a clue to start the investigation in the capital.
During Rean’s investigation is when we meet C. Who tells us that we might find the two in the Nord Highlands. Finally, we join C with a team consisting of Swin and Nadia, who are defectors from the secret society known as Garden, and a living doll named Lapis are working together on the going ons with Rufus and the finding who or what is giving him so much power and to put a stop it before it’s too late.
This whole story in The Legend of Heroes Trails into Reverie answers a lot of leftover questions that fans of both Zero and Cold Steel had for the last few years and resolve many things to help give closure to what felt right for both Erebonia and Crossbell to give room for Kiseki. It is sad for me to see the characters I’ve grown up with end now, but happy that the series gets to continue and the torch gets passed to the next generation of heroes we’ll follow in this series.
The music for The Legend of Heroes Trails into Reverie is still on point with not only the battle music, or the background music when travelling the overworld, but the music used for climatic moments was amazing. I felt the anger when the scene wanted me to make the incoming fight scene have that much more of strong impact.
There were times when I entered a town or went to a specific region, the music changed depending on the events taking place in the area. Revisiting old areas and hearing that the music was almost the same as when I first heard it, with some added flare into the mix that gave more life to not only the scenery, but it transported me to the location whenever I closed my eyes.
Since we’ll be bouncing between all 3 protagonists, a new system was introduced called Trails to Walk. This system allows us to go through the story at any point after we’ve reached their inclusion into the game and change their perspective at any point in the game. I’ve enjoyed the control of being able to go to any point of the story between Lloyd, Rean and C with the Trails to Walk system. The next system that they added was the United Fronts.
This system allows for the well-known All-out attack which allowed only the 4 team members to attack all the enemies at once and has now evolved to allow up to 5 to 10 more people to join in on the fight allowing more damage to happen in some major fights. The first time I executed the United Fronts in a major boss fight, I was laughing and grinning with joy at the amount of damage I did to them.
Next will be the True Reverie Corridor, which is a massive randomly generated dungeon with countless layers with it that it was not only a great source of getting the materials I need for some very much needed items to be made, but it also proved as a nice grinding ground that helps regulate everyone’s levels to keep them in shape for future fights ahead. The biggest thing that caught me off guard was the first time I received Healing or Sealing stones (which are used for unlocking daydreams and minigames) it gave me another person to have in my group that wasn’t ever going to be there in the first place.
Just getting someone who was once an enemy and they become a fellow teammate and going harder on the foes who don’t run away from just looking at me. Though, I won’t lie that I spend more of my time in this corridor and the next 2 features that I came across during my run throughout the corridor are the Shuffle Scuffles and the Dreamland Hills. The Shuffle Scuffles are found when you find a chest surrounded by void pillars, and you won’t know who the enemies you’ll be facing and what you’re going to need for those fights, but I always bring a healer and almost every possible element of Arts in my disposal.
The Dreamland Hills to me felt like a bonus stage where there was a bigger fish to fry and earn a lot more from when just doing the corridor alone. The last surprise system that caught me off guard and enjoyed the most was the much-needed weakness reminder to all of our Arts that we use on enemies from either previous fights or when using the Battle Scope on them to discover their weaknesses. Knowing that I don’t have to constantly have open their bios in each fight that includes repeating enemies during grinding sessions.
I really enjoyed my journey within The Legend of Heroes Trails into Reverie and closing this chapter with both the SSS and the members of Class VII both old and new. Watching this game evolve to become such a great story captivated my heart, emotions and tears in such a way that I am glad more and more people are playing this game and learning to love this series as much as I. Waiting for NIS America to bring Kuro no Kiseki to the West and seeing where the story continues after this grand story ends.
I still stuck to some things from my previous runs of the series only using the Pom Pom lures during grinding sessions, grabbing the free items from the DLCs and knowing that the best girl in the series is Emma the Witch. And no one in this world can change my mind.
