Entertainment communities are amongst one of the most competitive and crowded niches in social media. For example, my favorite YouTube channel is Minecraft Awesome Parodys, a group of Microsoft Paint-wielding dabblers with a knack for goofy songs about Minecraft (a video game). Although I only started listening to them recently, they already have over 70,000 subscribers and two albums. The key to building an audience is to create content that your target audience wants – not likes – but actually craves and has an insatiable appetite for more of it. Take a look at what kind of content they produce:
First off, Minecraft Awesome Parodys spends the first minute or so on the general introduction and describing the situation they’re in before getting into singing parodies about Minecraft.
Secondly, their videos are between 7-14 minutes long, which is of course a lot of time to invest if you were to watch one from start to finish. However, looking at their subscriber count I’m sure that’s not stopping new viewers from clicking on the links to watch their videos.
What’s also interesting is that they tend to alternate between “silly” and “serious” songs, as well as the type of song (ie: rap versus rock versus pop versus metal). I would guess that because Minecraft Awesome Parodys has such a wide range of content, fans will watch whatever comes out.
However, it’s important to note that the content isn’t the only thing that you need to do correctly:
- Make sure your videos are easy to find: Follow conventions and avoid using keywords that might be too difficult for search engines to understand. For example, Minecraft Awesome Parodys’ channel is under their real name rather than “Minecraft Awesome Parodys” or even just “M.A.P.”
- Interact with your viewers: Listen to their feedback, answer questions, respond to comments – you don’t want to leave them hanging! After all, it’s important that they feel like they are valued by you for this relationship to work out long-term.
- Know what audience you’re dealing with: What are the unique interests of the people who follow you? Why do they follow you? How can you expand upon these existing likes and interests?
- Join other communities related to yours: Depending on how popular your content is it might attract other creators looking to collaborate with someone who has a similar style/following as yourself.
- Don’t be afraid to share content or merchandise with your audience: Why not take advantage of revenue streams other than ads? If you can sell t-shirts, CDs, ebooks, etc. too then why not try to do so? It’s important that you don’t lose sight of the bigger picture here. Although it might seem easier said than done, try not to get overwhelmed by all these pieces of advice! Remember to take it one step at a time and make sure every single piece of content is high quality before considering expanding. You never know – maybe there will be an opportunity for you in this crowded market if you put yourself out there!
