It’s not just cinemas across the UK where the Avengers have been smashing records; merchandise from the film – including character toys and costumes – have been flying off the shelves at Argos stores up and down the country.
According to sales data from the leading toy retailer, the best-selling Avenger is Hulk, with the classic character fighting off new kids on the block such as Groot and Star-Lord
Hulk is closely followed by Thanos and Captain Marvel, with Iron Man and Captain America making up the top five most popular characters from the movie.
More than 115,000 Argos customers have searched for Hulk goodies so far this year alone, with up to 12,000 people on the lookout for Avengers merchandise on the Argos website on just one day.
Avengers Endgame, which broke UK box office records with a £43.4m opening weekend, sees the popular superheroes do battle with super villain Thanos after the intergalactic ruler wiped away half the population of the universe.
The top ten bestselling Avengers stars (and arch-villain Thanos):
- Hulk
- Thanos
- Captain Marvel
- Iron Man
- Captain America
- Spider-Man
- Thor
- Black Panther
- Ant-Man
- Groot
- Star-Lord
Despite only being the eighth most popular in the franchise, Black Panther boasts the biggest selling item of all – the Radio Control Cruiser (£10.99) – showing the massive appetite for the relatively new entry to the Avengers team. With Black Panther set for a sequel, the Wakandan superhero is expected to sustain strong toy sales over the next decade.
Paul Kinge, Senior Toys Buyer at Argos, said: “Sales of Avengers toys are set to soar over the coming weeks as fans flock to the new film. Despite his villainous role, it seems that kids (and grown-up kids alike) can’t get enough of the villainous, purple Thanos. However, even Thanos couldn’t defeat the mighty green one, showing that there could be appetite for a new standalone Hulk film.”
