Towaga: Among Shadows Review

Towaga: Among Shadows from Sunnyside Games and Noodlecake is a 2D shoot ‘em up arcade adventure game that features a gorgeous art style and has lots of flashy effects. The game features over 70 unique levels and players can choose from up to four different game modes. That’s a lot of content to get through so is the game enjoyable? And is it worth picking up?

Towaga: Among Shadows starts off pretty simple, the voidmonger attacks your village and it’s up to you to stop his evil reign of terror. You’re thrust into the heat of battle and quickly taught how to defend yourself against the void creatures. This is done with a simple in-game tutorial that gets you battle ready quite fast. Players will be taught how to fire beams of light and casual gamers can rejoice. Towaga: Among Shadows has incredibly simple gameplay that anyone can enjoy.

The gameplay is extremely straightforward since you’ll predominantly be firing a beam of light with your hands towards void creatures unleashed by Metnal the Voidmonger. Players will take on the role of Chimù who has been tasked by Kurro to purify five shrines and restore light to the world of Az’kalar. Firing light beams involves simply clicking and holding down the left mouse button while targeting enemies. Unfortunately, while you’re on the ground, Chimù can’t move at all. He’s fixed into one position and you’ll have to defend that position with your light beams.

Upon completing an early level, Chimù will soon unlock some of his latent power and learn how to fly. This also unlocks flying levels. The flying parts of the levels feature a lot more freedom of movement. Players will be able to fly around a large area that’s been walled off with void energy and will fire beams of light at void enemies that continuously spawn. It’s incredibly simple but oh so fun.

Later on in the game, players will also unlock special abilities for Chimù to use. These abilities include an ice beam that freezes enemies or a shockwave that pushes them back. There’s quite a few to unlock and they all have their own unique strengths. Chimù can upgrade his abilities and players can also equip different outfits for him. There’s plenty of lore in the game which explains the backstory too and overall, it’s enjoyable to read through these collectibles and learn more about the world in Towaga. The soundtrack used in Towaga: Among Shadows is well suited to the type of game it is. There’s plenty of tracks to get you hyped for battle and the sound effects are great.

Towaga: Among Shadows also features a local multiplayer mode where players can battle each other. You’ll have to use a gamepad to do this though on PC or alternatively play with someone else via Steam’s remote play feature. The other game modes included are a survival mode and void realm mode and this adds to the game’s longevity.

Graphically, Towaga: Among Shadows looks great. Animations are exceptionally good and the overall cartoon aesthetic is extremely praiseworthy. The game is a visual feast for the eyes and firing beams and other abilities are as flashy as you’d expect it to be. Enemy designs are also great and fit in with the light vs dark theme Towaga has going on throughout.

Overall, Towaga: Among Shadows is a simplistic game involving firing beams of light to defeat dark enemies. It doesn’t break the mould but that’s not a bad thing. It’s fun, and quite enjoyable to play. Having so many levels on offer and the ability to upgrade your skills adds to the game’s longevity too. Being simplistic though, it would be advisable to play Towaga: Among Shadows in short bursts instead of in one long playthrough. You’ll enjoy it far more that way.
