Remakes and remasters of classic games can always be a contentious point for fans of the original, critics and fans alike look to find the positives and flaws from the updated graphics, mechanics, gameplay and beyond.
Honcho analysed Metacritic data to find out which remakes and remasters left a bad taste in the mouth of critics.
Worst Remasters and Remakes of Video Games
- PS4 Devil May Cry HD didn’t offer anything new for gamers with a 34% drop in rating
- Resident Evil 4 has the most remakes and remasters (eight!) yet the horror franchise’s 4th instalment makes the worst list with Silent Hill
One Metacritic review of the PS4 Devil May Cry version states, “The HD Collection offers nothing new and looks technically out of date. Only suitable for those who want to catch up on Dante’s first performances.”
On Warcraft III: Reforged, PC Mag wrote,
“Blizzard has addressed some of the complaints and criticism hurled its way and has promised to work on many of these issues. Naturally, one must ask why the game was released in such a state, especially considering the negative attention the company has garnered over the past year with the reveal of Diablo Immortal and the Blizzard/China controversy.”

Best Remasters and Remakes of Video Games
- Rez makes the top of the list as one of the best remakes/remasters with an 11 % increase from the original
One 100 point review on Rez HD wrote his enthusiasm for the remake. “In HD, true synaesthesia has been achieved. Other improved games according to critics include remasters and remakes such as the dark, brooding world of Demon’s Souls as well as two remakes of Sega’s Yakuza franchise with primary protagonist Kiryu who is a reformed gangster.
