The study by online gaming site Spades Challenge analysed global monthly Google searches for the term “how to beat” to see which bosses players need help with the most.
It found that Pokemon GO’s Giovanni IS currently the most challenging boss to beat, with players worldwide searching how to beat him more than 46,200 times a month. In-game, he is the head of Team GO Rocket, the main antagonist group in Pokemon GO, and the mobile game’s popularity has meant lots of gamers are finding his battle difficult.
Cliff, the second Pokemon GO character on the list, comes in second. Searches for how to beat him are made more than 37,500 times a month. In-game, Cliff is one of the many leaders of Team GO Rocket and is one of multiple hurdles players have to face, as one of the first main bosses that players must vanquish to say that they’ve ‘beaten the game’.
Coming in third place is another Pokemon GO boss in Arlo. 12,400 searches a month are made for how to beat Arlo, who is the last main boss, before moving to fight Giovanni.
# | Boss | Game | “How to beat” monthly searches |
1 | Giovanni | Pokemon GO | 46,200 |
2 | Cliff | Pokemon GO | 37,500 |
3 | Arlo | Pokemon GO | 12,400 |
4 | Sierra | Pokemon GO | 10,900 |
5 | Margit the Fell Omen | Elden Ring | 8,400 |
6 | Fire Giant | Elden Ring | 5,300 |
7 | Godrick | Elden Ring | 4,500 |
8 | Elden Beast | Elden Ring | 4,000 |
9 | Tree Sentinel | Elden Ring | 3,000 |
10 | Thunderblight Ganon | The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild | 2,900 |
Elden Ring bosses take up five of the ten spots on the list, with ‘Margit the Fell Omen’, one of the game’s first main bosses, receiving more than 8,400 searches a month from players looking to beat them. The game’s sixth main boss, the Fire Giant, receives more than 5,300 searches a month. Godrick, another one of the game’s first bosses, receives more than 4,500 searches a month. Additionally, the Elden Beast, part of the game’s final boss fight, receives more than 4,000 searches a month, and the Tree Sentinel, the game’s third main boss, receives more than 3,000 searches a month.
Thunderblight Ganon, the only boss from another title, Breath of the Wild, receives more than 2,900 for players wanting to beat him. His battle is one that players will have to fight near the end of the title and beating him will end the game.
Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson from Spades Challenge said: “With Elden Ring adding to FromSoftware’s collection of challenging titles, it’s clear that it and Pokemon GO are the main games people are struggling to beat. Additionally, Elden Ring’s difficulty can only be emphasised, with nearly half of the title’s main bosses appearing in the top ten.”
