Legends of Pegasus is a turn based and real time strategy game developed by Novacore studios and published by Kalypso media. The game is set in outer space in a galaxy where a group of humans have been driven from their home planet due to an alien race betraying their friendly alliance. As a fleet of ships flee the situation they go through a wormhole which leads them to an unexplored part of the galaxy. They must fight off enemies and rebuild their lost homes in this strange part of the galaxy.
The game starts with the player controlling this fleet of human ships which are thrown into battle immediately after entering the wormhole. The game involves real time strategy combat when you run into unfriendly foes but also involves colonizing planets and building up a civilization.
The opening sets the scene nicely with a voice over during the credits of the distressed crew being thrown into battle. The game starts out with a battle. The combat is simple, it’s a point and click system and is an easy but exciting way to get the game going.
The controls are also explained to the user at the beginning of the game. These are simple enough to get the hang of it. Controlling the ships is straightforward and the interface is not too complicated. I did find however that after the first battle I wasn’t completely sure what to do next.
The next task at hand is to get a colony established on a suitable planet and start building and researching. There are structures you need to build to sustain a colony such as factories and cultural buildings and there’s also a technology tree so you can research improvements for your buildings, ships and weapons.
Unfortunately the game lags a bit as you get your first colony set up. After I had built a structure and picked a technology to research I clicked end turn and there was nothing, so I clicked it again and nothing still. There was a lack of tutorial messages popping up to help you and I realised that you just have to keep clicking end turn until your building is built. Each building takes a number of turns to be completed as do the technologies. The tutorial messages also tell you what to build at the beginning of the game so this part can be a bit slow.
I also thought the interface could have been improved. There is in game dialogue where a picture of the character speaking appears on the side of the screen with subtitles underneath while the action continues. This text is very small and a bit hard to read. There is also a small text problem with the little box to the other side that displays what you have to do to progress. Basically there’s key information in hard to see places and I think this could have been laid out better. It’s not always possible to know what you should be doing. Having said that once you realize this it’s not really an issue.
I liked the music in the game, the opening sequence music nicely adds some atmosphere and it continues throughout the building process and battles and adds a nice quality to the game. The graphics aren’t cutting edge but still nicely done and add to the game overall.
I liked the idea for this game. I’m always a fan of a good turn based strategy building game and this one is pretty good if not a little slow to get started. There are three different races and twelve playable factions.
The three races are humans, X’or and Anthrox. Humans are the ones we start off as and have trouble ontrolling their war like instincts. The game is set in the future where alien technology has made armies stronger and the effects of this more devastating. While there was once hope for a united Earth, this was ruined by a few. The X’or however are a robot race who are determined not to be consumed by greed and power and are constantly trying to integrate and spread knowledge to otherr worlds. They have become experts in technology and no olnger have biological needs. They colonize planets no organics could. The Anthrox are an organic, old race that feel at one with the universe. The came from the starts and adapt to different planets, travel great differences between them and even survive in the void between them.
What I also like is that there is a good plot to this game and a big universe brimming with life, there are back stories to all the races and I think the game does a good job of bringing life and atmosphere to the experience. There is also a multiplayer mode and options for mods.
While the game isn’t perfect it is quite enjoyable and certainly has some good traits. I liked the music and plot and general atmosphere while I feel the interface could have been improved.
