In Bastion You play The Kid, who has just awoken to find that his home of Caelondia destroyed by an event called The Calamity. You help the kid get to a place called The Bastion, a safe place and the last stronghold for the people of Caelondia. Bastion plays out like a story where the sequence of events is described by the narrator.
The Bastion itself acts as a hub, which you will get to have to rebuild over the course of the game time, whenever you complete a level you get to rebuild a part of the Bastion. From Bastion you can venture into new chapters, tinker around with a selection of weapons and skills. You can also purchase various upgrades or complete challenges that are not part of the story.
Bastion’s main story does not take that long to complete around about 5 or 6 hours. There is a Game Plus feature which is very handy as it gives the game an extra boost in long-activity which is really needed as you will probably need to go back and unlock things you missed on the first play through. Outside of the main story there is an in-game achievement system, weapon challenges and survival modes. Each weapon has its own challenge where you will need to work out the best way of completing the stage. The three survival stages are another great extra feature as these stages fill out missing part of the back story and reward you with XP and currency.
Bastion is an action RPG, hacking & slash type of game, As you work your way through each chapter you will pick up an assortment of weapons to choose from these include a mighty hammer, a bow, a pike, a shield and a gun which all can be modified with special abilities. You are also able to equip two weapons at the same time. Special abilities (Skills) can be anything from planting mines to throwing grenades, or to a specific weapon ability. Each time you gain a level you will automatically unlock an extra tonic socket. You collect tonics through out the stages and are classed as passive bonus abilities which for an Example: take less damage, carry more healing pots etc.
The currency in the game allows you to purchase items that you might of missed in the, which uopi can then purchase at themLost & Found store.
Bastion has so many good things going for it from the way the game constructs its levels as you work your way through each stage. The dungeons in bastion are colourful works of art not what you would expect a dungeon to look like. The game’s narration is great and keep the game following along and keeps you in your seat.The soundtrack is also adds to the overall effect of the game, the creator’s described the music as an “Acoustic frontier trip-hop” and It perfectly complements the whole game.
