Disgaea 4 Complete+ Review

The Disgaea franchise of games has been around for over a decade now and has become a staple of Nippon Ichi Software’s games lineup. Disgaea 4 Complete+ is a remaster, and a relaunch of sorts, onto both the PS4 and Nintendo Switch. We got our hands on the Nintendo Switch version and Hades has never looked so good.

Disgaea 4 follows the tale of Valvatorez, an imprisoned blood-sucking vampire. He is joined by his companion Fenrich and there’s a range of other characters that will join your party as you progress through the game’s over the top storyline. Disgaea 4 Complete+’s story is filled with jokes, humour and there’s an overall tone of light-hearted fun throughout despite the game dealing with demons, monsters and the underworld.

Gameplay in Disgaea 4 is where it truly excels. If you’re a newcomer to the series, you’re going to probably spend a long time getting to grips with the game’s mechanics. Disgaea 4’s gameplay is first and foremost all about strategy. As a strategy role-playing game, players will move their characters around an isometric grid and face off against enemies. Players will have to carefully select their characters to do battle and play into their strengths and weaknesses.

Additionally, in Disgaea 4, you can stack characters by picking them up and continuing to pick up other friendly characters. This then allows you to pull off special attacks or increase your movement range on the grid. There’s a variety of other gameplay elements to learn as well including voting on bills in the senate using the assembly system which affects your party in multiple ways. There’s also their magic hanging monsters to form weapons or fusing them to form even stronger allies.

Much of Disgaea 4 is left up to the player to learn by themselves. The sheer amount of content on offer might be too much for newcomers but should they decided to invest hours and hours of time into the game, it’ll all click together. And when it does click together it’s glorious. Disgaea 4 Complete+ is the best edition of the game you can get right now and includes all the DLC content previously released. This means that players will have access to at least a minimum of 50 hours of content and upwards of 150 hours if they really want to get the most out of the game.

Graphically, the sprites, combat animations and flashy effects in Disgaea 4 Complete+ are visually crisp and look great. The anime aesthetic is on point throughout and there’s a lot of really great looking monster designs as well as characters. The soundtrack is also just as good with a lot of really catchy tunes and orchestral arrangements that fit the theme of the game quite well.

Overall, Disgaea 4 Complete+ is the best version of Disgaea 4 you can get right now. It includes a metric tonne of content and the charming anime visuals and humour filled story will keep you entertained for hours and hours on end. The gameplay learning curve might be too much investment for some people though and we can wholeheartedly understand if it’s not to your liking but this is a title that should definitely be tried out at least once. You’ll either be hooked or you’ll decide to pick up something else. Hopefully, it’s the former though because Disgaea 4 Complete+ is a genuinely engaging, complex game that is incredibly rewarding and lots of fun the further you get into it. The only minor gripe we had with the title is that on Nintendo Switch, it has some soft locking issues but these will hopefully be resolved with a future patch.
