At its very core, Escape from Tarkov (EFT) is a hardcore looter shooter game with elements of the role-playing game (RPG) genre. As the name suggests, the setting is a fictional city in Russia called Tarkov. A conflict has erupted between Russian and Western forces, and you have to escape from the war zone filled with private military companies (PMCs).
There are two main groups of PMCs who are slugging it out in the war-torn city in the game. The BEAR PMC represents the Russian forces and the USEC PMC represents the Western forces. It’s basically a game of determining who has the best military survival skill.
EFT is a game that has received quite some rave reviews. Whether you’re hearing it for the first time or planning to play it as a beginner who would like to quickly improve your skills, you might want to read on and learn a few tips here.
1. Know The Map Thoroughly
One of the most common mistakes of beginners in Escape from Tarkov is that they don’t stay on one map long enough. They bounce around going from one map to another without really taking the time to learn one map thoroughly. This is the first tip that beginners should know. For instance, you should learn and know woods map Tarkov thoroughly before you move on to the next map.
Knowledge of a map is one of the most important factors you should need to have to win in Tarkov. You should learn everything about a map, including its loot locations, stashes, scav pawns, extracts, etc. It’s one of the best ways to increase your chance of surviving EFT. When you’ve already learned map basics, then you can shift your focus to your other game skills such as gunfighting and looting efficiency.
2. Know The Extraction Points
Related to learning and knowing the map, you should be familiar with the extraction points, which is one of the most important things you’ll have to learn in EFT. An extraction point is your escape or exit point. There are several different extraction points on every single map in EFT.
Depending on how you’re going to conduct the raid, you’ll be given various selections. You’ll need help from other players to be able to access some of the extraction points. There are also extraction points that will require you to use a key.
There are extraction points that are always open, but there are some which are only open at specified times such as Smugglers Boat on Customs. Extraction points are usually item-sensitive, cash, or time-sensitive. If you’re in a rush to escape, don’t be overconfident on relying on just knowing one extract. You can use game hotkeys and bindings when you’re in a hurry.
3. You Need Ammunition To Kill
Another important thing to know about Tarkov as a beginner player is that only ammunition can deal serious damage to your opponents. Whatever weapons you have, they’re nothing if you don’t have the firepower to kill.
There’s no need yet to delve into the ballistics specs because this is quite a complex thing in Tarkov, but there are numerous online forums where you can discuss and research the various ammunition types in EFT. They’ll even talk about the depth and kind of penetration of each type of ammunition and the potential damage that they can cause.
4. Use Scav Runs To Loot At No Risk
‘Scav’ or ‘scav runs’ is Tarkov’s language for scavenger runs. This means that you’ll go into a raid not as a PMC but as a scavenger. Know that in EFT, there are two kinds of scavs. There are artificial intelligence (AI)-operated scavs, but there are also other players who are there on the ground as scavs themselves.
If you go in as a scav, the AI-run scavs won’t shoot at you. But the human-operated scavs can and will shoot at you. And remember this rule in Tarkov, once you shoot at a scav whether AI or human, all the scavs will fire at you. So don’t shoot at AI scavs unless you want their gear or you’re already at your extract.
The good thing about scavs is that it’s a way of saving money when you’re just a beginner in Tarkov. Since you’re joining the raid as a scav, you’re not risking any of your gear. So, whatever loot you can get from a raid adds to your stuff without the risk of losing any of your gear.
5. Use Offline Mode For Surveillance And Practice
Another tip you need to know is that you can use the offline mode to survey the maps and do some practice runs. The offline mode is a great tool for improving your game in EFT.
You can use offline mode to study the maps. Since you’re offline, other players won’t interrupt you. It’s the fastest way to thoroughly learn a map before going into the map for a raid. You can go at your own pace without worrying about being killed by other players.
The other useful thing about offline mode is that you can use it to try your weapons by taking your aim at scavs. When you’re offline, nothing is recorded. So you can use up your ammo and shoot as much as you want. Your ammo arsenal would still be intact when you go back to the main menu.
Learn And Practice
Escape From Tarkov is quite a brutal game, but you’ll start to like it once you learn the ropes of the game. First, you have to know the map by heart before going in. Then, follow the other tips mentioned in this article and you should be on your way to making your great escape.
