Capcom have released Mega Man X DiVE onto Steam without all the mobile phone online gacha mechanics. The mobile game might be discontinued but thankfully, it lives on without any live-service problems and issues offline. This is something we wish that other developers would do with their mobile games – Especially since there’s some truly great mobile games out there that have vanished into obscurity when their servers were shut down.
Players in Mega Man X DiVE Offline will enter the “Deep Log”. A digital archive world that’s being corrupted by rogue data. This rogue data needs to be defeated before it wreaks havoc on everyone and everything and this is where you come in. Players will team up with RiCO, a software program that guides you along your journey to save the Mega Man archives from corruption.
Taking on the role of a “Hunter” program, players will play through numerous levels of side-scrolling action. You can pick your playable character from a rather large selection of characters that can be unlocked by simply playing the game and obtaining the correct materials.
The levels in Mega Man X DiVE are quite different to what would feature in a traditional Mega Man games. These levels are played in short bursts and can be completed in around 5 minutes or less depending on the difficulty and on how you play. You can beeline towards the boss enemies for example or take your time and eliminate every enemy and look for secret items in some levels.
Mega Man X DiVE Offline is quite clearly a mobile game given how its game design means that it’s meant to be played in short bursts. It would fit right in on the Nintendo Switch but for some reason, it’s currently only available on Android, iOS and Steam. This is a game that will lead to hours and hours of enjoyment as you level up your favourite Mega Man universe characters and progress in the story.
The levels in Mega Man X DiVE are truly great to get through. Players will face off against waves of enemy forces through multiple levels before finally reaching a boss level. The boss enemies in MEGA MAN X DiVE Offline are great with some really putting up a challenge.
Speaking of challenge, upon getting through a level, players will unlock a challenge mode version of the level too which adds even more longevity to the title.
Mega Man X DiVE’s gameplay can be quite varied depending on the character you’re playing as. Since there’s an incredibly hefty amount of characters, each one plays slightly differently to the last with different attributes and special attacks available. For example, Zero can use an energy shield which can be thrown out like a boomerang. Playing as different characters is extremely enjoyable and you can really have a tonne of fun in the levels on offer purely by trying out different characters.
There’s also a range of weapons to unlock and these can also be upgraded further using the in-game currency earned from simply completing levels. Gone are the predatory gacha mechanics! Players can simply play the game to their heart’s content without having to worry about paywalls or pay to win features. It does get quite a bit more challenging in the later levels but by then, you should have significantly levelled up characters to deal with the difficulty spikes.
Graphically, Mega Man X DiVE Offline looks great. Given the fact that it’s a mobile game that’s been ported and changed up a bit, it still looks a tad rough around the edges in-game but the menus and other aspects are crisp and vivid. The character designs in particular look fantastic even though the models themselves may look a bit less detailed.
The soundtrack to Mega Man X DiVE Offline is about what you’d expect from a Mega Man game. That means that the game is filled with some great electronic music tracks that play while you blast your way through enemies and bosses. There isn’t any English voice acting here unfortunately but the Japanese voice acting for RiCO is well done and so too are the voices of the characters themselves when attacking and using special abilities.
Mega Man X DiVE Offline’s extensive upgrade system which covers everything from your weapons to your characters to their sub-weapons and more is quite a lot to take in at first. Once you get used to the game’s systems though, you’ll be unlocking and upgrading your characters in no time as you progress through the game. It’s very satisfying seeing experience bars fill up and levelling up characters and the game clearly ticks all the right dopamine boxes. Capcom knew exactly what they were doing with this mobile game and it’s every bit as addictive as ever on Steam.
Overall, Mega Man X DiVE Offline is a great addition to the Mega Man line-up. It may be a modified port of a mobile game but the levels on offer here have some great platforming elements and are extremely fun to play through with different characters. If you’re a fan of Mega Man or side-scrolling platformer shooters, Mega Man X DiVE Offline will definitely appeal to you and gets a recommendation from me. Give this game a try and you wont regret it.
