Memento mori 2 is a 3D point and click investigation-adventure game developed by centauri Production and published by Lace mamba Global. I think in fairness I should probably state how little I like point and click games so if this hurts a bit I am sorry but like pulling a band aid of this should be done quickly and painlessly.
Momento mori 2 starts off with the protagonist Maxwell Duran and his wife enjoying a holiday in Africa when suddenly there dragged into a theft at a museum close by that has been deemed as closed by uncooperative policemen, this and with Maxwell’s strange visions or nightmares mean the case takes a more strange turn. A major point about the game that irate me was its lack of back story, in fact I have no idea what happened in the first momento mori but all I get from the beginning of this is Maxwell’s wife stating it was “bad” and his brewding picture, even checking back in his journal all I see are poor sketches. I mean “bad” is not a quality descriptive word stubbing my toe is “bad” , braking my arm is “bad” and the holocaust was “bad” but I’m pretty sure I would rather have a stubbed toe or Brocken toe then another holocaust. I mean whatever happened couldn’t have been that bad as it doesn’t seem to dampen Durans over happy attitude. The fact that it is called momento mori gives some clue (spoiler it is Latin for you will die), however that really wouldn’t make sense for this one.
The game may be an adventure point and click however it seems to take a more serious approach with most the “puzzles” making at least some sense and being logical. I still managed to randomly bend a pole without really knowing what I was doing it for but at least it isn’t something too obscure as it came in hand when needing to open the windows , and no not in the fun way. Which actually kind of reminds me another little irritation as to allow you to actually get near the window you have to give the receptionist a gift, maybe some chocolates? And how would you get those oh not by say going to a shop like a normal person , I mean at one point you exchange a grand to pay for using a decrepit building so you’re evidentially not too hard up on cash, but by inspecting a badge that was left in your room by some maid. The story could have ended there if the maid had just not forgotten her I.D as apparently you are equipped with forensic scientists, investigators and policemen but have the inability to ever use a shop. The story is extremely straight laced (which makes the inability to buy some stupid chocolates from a shop even more irritating), with the basic investigation and continuing that kind of feel thought the whole game, I’m not knocking it for that as although it can make the game feel excruciatingly slow, solving the puzzles and being attentive to detail was actually quite fun. I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun with a window frame when I was dusting it for prints and then trying to match them.
Visually the game is amazing, I don’t want to really mutter the disgusting phrase new “gen graphics” but then again it’s a PC game so it probably didn’t have to try too hard to get the graphics. The game looked how you would expect the streets of Africa to look in the built up areas and really felt like it to, the face expressions of the characters may be a little behind, with occasional lip movement that really didn’t match what they were saying but, it really didn’t stand out too much and unless you are the kind of douche that corrects other peoples grammar all the time you should be alright. The sound doesn’t really do anything for and matches that slowness the game has about it, after a while I think the kind of elevator music you get when your outside your car may bug you a little bit but it’s not incredibly annoying that you have to start smashing you’re speakers too bits.
Overall if you want a point and click adventure game that looks beautiful and feels more like a detective book with a hint of the supernatural then this should suit you really well, just by being so serious with its puzzles and story it loses that goofiness that makes adventures at least tolerable for me, that and the other hundred other adventure games like broken swords that are turning these kinds of games to a common sight probably slants my view a bit. If they do make another one maybe they should call it Potentia –Mori.
