The Heroic Games devs like to prepare holiday content, particularly for Halloween and Christmas. This year, with the devs focusing on creating mission content prior to launch, they are sharing a holiday mission in which superheroes invade an alien world, the Snow Lair, to recover stolen Christmas presents. In this universe, that raid is completely fair, since we saw the same snow monsters invade Apotheosis City in 2018. Now we have more of their backstory.
This is a fun mission, and the players reach the Snow Lair by jumping through a dimensional portal from the Beta Club. The fight is also fun, and I always like to see developers actually playing and fighting in their own game. The devs tell us that they will be expanding the content for this new world, which is an energy-research planet overrun by snow monsters.
Lately the SoH devs have been giving us insights into how they create mission content. One of things that stands out in this video is the fusion of new and old game features. While the mission, the tracks in the snow, and the alien world are completely new, the monsters, the superpowers, and the combat are all familiar if you have been keeping up with the development of SoH. As the SoH devs like to say, all of the pieces of the game “fit” together and assemble into a compelling universe.
Another thing that jumps out from this mission, and the recent newsletters, is that the variety of mission locations in SoH seems to be increasing dramatically. In March and April of 2020 the SoH team had a major community event, but all of the fighting, costume contests, and other stuff happened in the open SciFi world of Apotheosis City. Lately we are seeing mostly new locations: engineering tunnel spaces, alien worlds, and magically-themed dungeons. The game launch is likely to show us a lot of new environments.
Ship of Heroes has been publishing a steady stream of content about mission creation. The next newsletter is likely to be a milestone schedule for the first half of 2021, hopefully with some information about the launch date of the game. There is also a major community event in the works for early 2021, which will be focused on letting community members play instanced mission content and provide feedback.
