Here is an update that is about to come out later today concerning new mission content and progress on missions.
The devs at Ship of Heroes have given us a newsletter this week, which describes their vision of the types and features of mission content they are currently building.
Ship of Heroes is not just replicating the old City of Heroes system – they are adding some new kinds of missions such as extra-difficult solo mission content called reward missions. And of course, there will be story arcs, task forces, and missions from random contacts scattered over Apotheosis City.
There is also a reference to several kinds of missions being available in something called the Causality Chamber, which will appear after the player completes a particular story arc in the game. This chamber gives a player the ability to replay old missions, and also allows a player to search for missions across timelines.
SoH devs are explicitly saying that players will be allowed to raise or lower the difficulty level of missions – this is an extremely useful and rarely seen feature in MMOs today. One that allows a support character to solo content that they normally would not be able to attempt.
A good deal of mission content has already been created, but the devs don’t give us a mission count – at least not in this newsletter, which is somewhat mysteriously entitled with “Part 1.”
The devs want to hear from the community how many hours of mission content justify a launch. There is a poll up on their website and a link to it at the end of the newsletter. On the one hand this is very positive – they must be dialing in on a launch in the foreseeable future. But on the other hand, this suggests that they might delay if the community wants more content than they can deliver quickly.
Donors and supporters may at last get a chance to play some of the instanced mission content of Ship of Heroes soon. In all of the alphas, betas, invasion and combat tests so far we have been deployed inside the city in the open space of the game and not generally inside dungeons. This may change soon.
Ship of Heroes has conducted five successful Alpha and Beta tests: one in 2017, two in 2018, a major character creator Beta in 2019, and their open community event a few months ago in 2020. Invasion testing is now underway, and will likely be followed by closed Beta testing of missions beginning before the end of 2020.
