Coffee Stain Publishing and Iron Gate Studio have revealed that Valheim has sold more than three million units in just 16 days on Steam Early Access. The viking invasion continues unabated as Valheim’s peak concurrent player record continues to climb, surpassing 390,000 earlier this week, exceeding the all-time highs of AAA titles such as Monster Hunter: World, and GTA V.
Despite the constant influx of new souls, Valheim maintains its critical acclaim, with over 60,000 ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ user reviews on Steam. Today Valheim also officially entered the 250 best reviewed games of all time on the platform, number 78 and climbing.
Not only are millions of vikings playing Valheim, but it’s also sustaining a robust audience on Twitch. Currently the seventh most watched game on the platform, ahead of CS:GO, Dota 2, Minecraft, and Rust, fans have watched over 20 million hours of gameplay since launch. Valheim also attracted over 147,000 peak concurrent viewers on February 17th, it’s highest yet.
Iron Gate Studio has already revealed a living Early Access roadmap, promising new biomes, new enemies, and improvements to combat, ships and more. Created by Iron Gate Studio, Valheim began as a one man passion project from CEO Richard Svensson in 2018, and the team was expanded to five by 2020. Coffee Stain, also headquartered in Skövde, came on board as publisher in 2019.
“We were always working with the assumption that the EA launch would be somewhat successful, so I guess it does not really change our plans that much. Except that maybe we can afford a bigger office now,” said Richard Svensson, CEO, Iron Gate Studio. On the Valheim community, he added “I really love when fans make paintings, music and other creative works inspired by Valheim. I guess I like to inspire people to create stuff”
“THREE MILLION?!! Already?” said Albert Säfström, CEO, Coffee Stain Publishing. “This level of success is uncharted territory for Coffee Stain. Thankfully we have Daniel Kaplan, who was part of Minecraft’s rise, on our team, as well as the truly remarkable developers at Iron Gate. We’re excited to be on this journey together.”
Coffee Stain Publishing launched in 2017, the team has worked with a select number of titles, including the critically acclaimed arcade shooter Huntdown, coming to Steam soon, and Deep Rock Galactic, which surpassed two million units sold earlier this year. Satisfactory, the otherworldly factory builder, developed and published by Coffee Stain, currently in Early Access, will soon launch its highly anticipated Update 4, and Midnight Ghost Hunt, the viral 4v4 prop hunt game, is ramping up for more frequent public alpha tests leading up to launch.
Valheim is now available for $19.99 on Steam Early Access for PC and Linux.
