Worms is one of those games which you can sit down for twenty minutes to play and enjoy it just as much as a game you would need to play for an hour or two to have the same experience. There are few games today which manage to be as competitive, hilarious and fun all at once as the Worms games have continuously been able to be. Whether you are a fan of the classic 2D games, the awesome 3D games or the more recent halfway house style Worms Revolution which brought us new physics objects and dangerous water flows around the map which could change the game in seconds, most people would certainly agree that Worms is still one of the most FUN games that you can play today.
The newly announced Worms Clan Wars is the latest Team 17 project in the Worms franchise, and at Rezzed this was on show to gamers to try out for the first time. The game, fans will be pleased to know, still has the unique charm and fun factor which it has always had. Everything you know and love abut Worms is still here to enjoy, but some new, additional features have been made for this game to offer you something more to try out. Speaking to the team being the game at Rezzed, the new Clan Wars side of the game was explained to us. The aim of this is to bring Worms into a more social environment among gamers by allowing them to group together in clans and battle it out to have the top clan in the game. Progression and ranking is based on the number of battles clan members win compared to each other, rather than the number of games they play. This will allow a clan of five players to compete with a clan of forty for the top spots if that smaller clan wins more of its battles, evening out the system to benefit skill over numbers.
Some gamers may be concerned about what this clan system has changed about the game they know and love, and we were instantly forced to ask one question; “is there still local multiplayer in the game?”. It is reassuring to know that this feature is still present, and that Team 17 still very much support the “playing games in the same room as your friends and family” side of gaming which sadly seems to be escaping the creative minds of the industry in recent times. For gamers who prefer to play games with a strong story over multiplayer, there is something here for you too. The team at Rezzed have informed us that for the first time ever Worms Clan Wars is to contain a whole and fulfilling story mode which will finally give a true storyline to a Worms game rather than their seemingly random campaign missions of the past.
Worms Clan Wars looks to be an exciting next step for the franchise which will build on the successes and features of the past while maintaining this former glory that fans know and love. More specific details of new the new clan system are likely to be released to the public in the near future, but what has been said so far sounds like an interesting move for the social side of Worms. The new game will still feature Revolution’s water physics and physics objects, but allegedly using them on a greater scale than before. We can also expect to see moving objects on maps which may change the way that the game is played. All in all this new development appears to be another very exciting one from Team 17, and as ever is one to look forward to.
Nathan’s Final Thoughts:
I have always been a massive fan of the Worms franchise. The 3D games were always my preferred style, but Revolution was a great step forward for the 2D games and certainly drew me in to that style of play. Worms Clan Wars looks like a very similar game, but the new features are definitely intriguing and it will be interesting to see if this new social style of play takes off among the franchise’s fans. I am happy to see that the game has also stuck to its traditional styles alongside this though, and am looking forward to seeing how he developers have gone about giving the game a storyline to follow…
Charlie’s Final Thoughts:
Just like Nathan I’ve spend many an hour being both the victim and victimiser of a well-aimed bazooka shell. Worms has remained, at its core, almost unchanged since its initial release (with the exception of the excellent 3D games) and praise the Seven because the gameplay is perfect just the way it is, the online functionality however was dated. Clan Wars hopes to rectify this by adding a huge amount of online content all with the intention of providing the most intense, worldwide Worms tournaments that have ever existed. I’m also excited to see the single player side of things as I really have no idea how this will be implemented but I’m sure the guys and gals at Team 17 will come up with something great (totally not biased because they were seriously nice and answered all my god-awful questions)
