Terror Squid from Apt Games is a bullet hell game thatβs slightly different from other bullet hell titles in the genre. What sets it apart from the others? Well firstly, you create your own bullet hell in Terror Squid.
Terror Squid kicks off with you moving your craft along a sphere. As you move, your vehicle emits a specific energy pattern behind it. Eventually, youβll come across the same energy you emitted and this energy will cause you to explode should you hit it. The goal of the game is to survive for as long as possible while emitting your energy and dodging previously emitted energy.
Once youβve survived long enough a gauge will be filled and you can trigger a detonation thatβs centred on your craft exploding all nearby energy in a gloriously beautiful manner.
Terror Squid is therefore a game about controlling yourself in a skillful manner. Since you emit energy that can kill you, later on, you need to plan your movements so as to not cause yourself to blow up later. After each explosion you trigger, your craft will emit a different pattern of energy. This makes things incredibly challenging the further you get into the game. Each round becomes significantly more difficult as the patterns of energy you emit change.
Planning your explosion and eliminating as much of your previously emitted energy is, therefore, key to success in Terror Squid. The less energy on the sphere, the higher your chances of surviving. This is an intense bullet-hell game and one thatβs great in short bursts. On Nintendo Switch, Terror Squid is great to pick up and play while on the go and thereβs no noticeable slowdown or lag at all.
The game is extremely light on content since thereβs no real progression system, only one game mode and youβll restart at level 1 each time you die. There are online leaderboards though and players can compete with each other by trying to beat each otherβs high scores.
Graphically, Terror Squid has a gorgeous vector graphics and colourful energy bullets and explosions. The soundtrack is great with an adrenaline pumping background track that will keep you engaged as you weave your way through your own energy bullets and patterns.
Overall, Terror Squid is a great, small indie game that is remarkably addictive. It works incredibly well on Nintendo Switch and is perfect to pick up and play in short bursts. Highly recommended from us if youβre looking for a bullet hell title to keep you busy with an arcade-like experience on the go. Just donβt expect too much from this game because itβs extremely light on content.
