Amplitude Studios has made a glorious return with Endless Dungeon, seamlessly merging multiple genres without fault. Mashing up genres can sometimes pose certain risks, but Amplitude Studios has managed to make it appear effortless. The tower defence aspect is masterfully interwoven with roguelite elements in a twin-stick shooter package, resulting in an enjoyable experience, bring along a friend and the fun escalates into full-on chaos.
You find yourself aboard The Station, stranded and with one possibility of salvation, get to the core. This is no easy task with the myriad of creatures between you and there, it is going to be one hell of a fight, thankfully you have a plethora of wonderfully designed heroes prepared to make this perilous journey.
Welcome aboard The Station, an abandoned sprawling space station that once belonged to another race. The term abandoned is used loosely here as the hub of The Station is home to a diverse group of characters. However, everything outside of that is infested with a variety of monsters eager to end your journey as quickly as you start.
Your objective in Endless Dungeon is to restart The Station’s core and escape. To achieve this, you will have to fight your way through multiple floors, each more challenging than the last. Your choices will make or break your mission, so choose wisely. Each floor is composed of a series of rooms, and you will have to decide which doors to open. A door could lead to a power-up, new weapon, or resources, but it could also unleash the monsters that inhabit the Station.
There are times when playing Endless Dungeon you might feel like a tactical genius, funnelling monsters towards the defences you have created, there are other instances where you feel like RNG is not on your side and you can become quickly overwhelmed by a flood of enemies rampaging from all directions. One door could be your salvation whereas that very same door could just as easily be your doom, the choice is yours.
The Station is a mysterious place where every map is unique and the exit is always a mystery. Every door you open leads to endless possibilities, and your chosen path will determine your fate. Will you be able to reach the core? or will you find yourself back at The Saloon, wondering what went wrong?
If You Fight Alone, You Die Alone
Endless Dungeon is an incredibly fun co-op experience that allows you to work together with your teammates to defend multiple areas and battle against hordes of monsters. By creating a squad with different characters, each with their own unique abilities, you can gain the edge in any fight. For example, you can choose to play as a tank-based robot to increase your durability, and taunt all monsters around you, or you can play as a janitor who may not be the most skilled fighter but can lock down areas with their trusty mop. Each character in the game has a distinctive playstyle that offers unique advantages to the team.
When you’re playing with friends, building a well-balanced team is crucial to reaching the core. You need to strike a balance between durability, firepower, and utility. However, even if you have all these key elements, you can still get unlucky with the RNG at times. You might not get better weapon upgrades or enough resources, which can put you at a disadvantage when things start to become more difficult. Sometimes it’s best to take the loss and invest the earnings into character upgrades.
Dividing responsibilities among team members can alleviate some of the stress that comes with planning defences, moving through the map, or escorting your crystal bot while facing an ever-increasing wave of monsters. Accomplishing all these tasks with friends can make the sting of poor RNG feel less impactful.
Playing games with friends is always fun, especially when things get intense. Amplitude Studios has created a gaming experience that becomes even better when you play with a party. When it feels like everything is about to fall apart, having extra players by your side can help reduce the stress and make for some unforgettable moments. This could be going down in a blaze of glory together or feeling like an epic band of heroes pushing through that final stand.
Get Comfy, You’ll Be Here A While
Amplitude Studios has given Endless Dungeon a good amount of replayability, interesting characters and a variety of experiences each time you play. As you play more through the game enemies do become a little stale. This is offset to some degree when you get to fight the larger boss-style creatures of the game, but this is at set times and not something that can happen randomly. Playing as different characters, levelling them up, and trying out different team setups adds to the game’s replayability.
Unlocking each of the characters is simple and straightforward. However, during co-op play, we occasionally had to return to our own world to unlock certain game aspects before progressing further. During co-op gameplay, there were instances where enemy animations failed to play, this led to some unwarranted deaths. This issue only affected the second player and never the host. Additionally, the weapons available in the game are somewhat limited and could benefit from a broader range of options to take out your enemies.
The sound design in Endless Dungeon is excellent, ranging from the music to the effects of the weapons and abilities. The feedback the player receives with certain sounds is well-balanced and perfectly timed. The voice acting is exceptional and brings a new layer of depth to the already intriguing cast of characters.
The unique art style and how well Amplitude Studios has woven three different genres together are both brilliant and visually appealing. Overall Endless Dungeon is a joy to play, more so with friends, and it is difficult to find faults with a game that has not only executed one genre well but three at the same time.
