Pearl Abyss has revealed that the first downloadable content for Crimson Desert, titled Crimson Desert Enhanced: Charting the Unknown, will launch worldwide on 15 October 2026, bringing a sizeable new adventure that takes players away from the familiar lands of Pywel and out onto the open sea.
The DLC will launch during Sony Interactive Entertainment’s State of Play showcase, with the worldwide release scheduled for 10:00 PM UTC. For players in the UK, that means a 11:00 PM BST launch on 15 October, while Europe gets access at midnight on 16 October.
Charting the Unknown Sends Crimson Desert Out to Sea
One of the biggest additions in Charting the Unknown is the ability for players to take command of their own ship and sail beyond Pywel’s familiar coastlines.
The ocean isn’t simply being added as another scenic backdrop, either. Players will be able to discover previously unexplored islands, search for hidden locations and uncover what lies beyond the boundaries of the base game’s world.
There is also plenty to discover beneath the waves. Underwater exploration will allow players to search for treasures, investigate sunken ruins and uncover mysteries hidden beneath the ocean, potentially opening up entirely new routes through the world.
New Threats Above and Below the Water
Of course, Crimson Desert isn’t exactly known for letting players enjoy a peaceful sightseeing trip.
Charting the Unknown introduces new threats across both land and sea, with Pearl Abyss promising some of the most demanding battles players will have encountered so far. That means adapting to different environments and changing tactics depending on whether the danger comes from the shoreline, an island or somewhere considerably deeper.
The combination of new enemies, unexplored locations and underwater areas could give the DLC a considerably different feel from simply adding another chunk of traditional land-based content.
Build a Home and a Life in Pywel
The expansion isn’t all about exploration and combat. Charting the Unknown also expands the more relaxed side of Crimson Desert, giving players additional ways to establish themselves within Pywel.
The housing system is being upgraded, allowing players to create and customise their own homes with greater freedom. The idea is to make your home feel more personal rather than simply being another functional location on the map.
Players will also be able to rent and manage various facilities, giving them another way to build their fortune. Alongside this comes the opportunity to develop deeper relationships with the people of Pywel, adding more of a life-simulation element to the open-world adventure.
Four New Stories Await
The expansion will also introduce several new narrative threads, covering an ominous presence in the desert, a dangerous political conflict, a journey beyond time and an ancient secret hidden beneath the waves.
Kliff, Oongka and Damiane will each continue forging their own paths as these stories unfold, with their journeys exploring questions of purpose, destiny and the secrets buried throughout Pywel.
That combination of stories sounds particularly interesting because the DLC isn’t simply expanding the map. It appears to be adding new narrative threads that will connect different corners of the world together, from the desert to the ocean floor.

IGC Take: This Sounds Like More Than a Traditional DLC Pack
Charting the Unknown is shaping up to be a pretty substantial first expansion for Crimson Desert. The obvious headline feature is sailing, but it is the combination of systems that makes this particularly interesting.
New islands, underwater exploration, sunken ruins, new enemies, additional stories, expanded housing, facilities to manage and deeper relationships with Pywel’s inhabitants all suggest that Pearl Abyss isn’t simply throwing another handful of quests onto the existing map.
The underwater exploration is probably the feature I’m most curious about. Taking an already expansive open world and effectively adding another layer beneath it could create some genuinely memorable discoveries, particularly if the sunken ruins and hidden locations contain their own stories rather than simply being places to loot.
At £19.99, the amount of content being promised will ultimately determine whether Charting the Unknown feels like an essential expansion or an expensive collection of extras. But on paper, Pearl Abyss certainly appears to be giving players plenty of reasons to head back into Pywel.
And let’s be honest: after spending countless hours running around a massive open world, being handed a ship and told there’s an entire ocean full of things we haven’t seen yet is exactly the sort of invitation most gamers are going to have trouble refusing.
