Jagex has announced that RuneScape Dragonwilds will launch on PlayStation 5 later this year, marking a historic first for the legendary franchise. Revealed during Sony’s latest State of Play showcase, the upcoming release will also be available to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers from day one.
The announcement represents a major milestone for the RuneScape franchise, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2026. Despite the series becoming one of the most recognisable names in online gaming, this will be the first time a RuneScape title has officially launched on console.
Already available through Steam Early Access, RuneScape: Dragonwilds has quickly become one of Jagex’s most successful new releases, surpassing one million copies sold and establishing itself as one of the company’s fastest-growing titles.
A New RuneScape Adventure
Unlike the long-running MMORPG that millions of players know and love, RuneScape: Dragonwilds offers a completely new survival crafting experience set within the RuneScape universe.
Players will journey to the dangerous continent of Ashenfall, either alone or alongside friends, exploring diverse regions filled with quests, monsters, resources, and powerful dragons. While it draws heavily from RuneScape’s rich lore, Dragonwilds delivers a fresh gameplay experience built around exploration, survival, crafting, and cooperative adventure.
The game blends classic RuneScape elements such as skill progression and questing with modern open-world survival mechanics, creating a unique experience that should appeal to both long-time RuneScape fans and newcomers alike.
Explore Ashenfall and Uncover Its Secrets
The mysterious land of Ashenfall serves as the backdrop for Dragonwilds’ adventure. Players will traverse forests, mountains, ruins, and magical landscapes while uncovering the secrets behind the continent’s fractured history.
Along the way, players will encounter familiar RuneScape enemies including Zogres and Black Knights, alongside entirely new threats created specifically for Dragonwilds. One of the most dangerous of these is the fearsome Garou, a new enemy type introduced for the survival adventure.
The world is accompanied by a soundtrack featuring reorchestrated RuneScape classics alongside hours of brand-new music composed specifically for the game.
Grind Skills, Slay Dragons
As expected from a RuneScape experience, skills play a major role in player progression. Gathering resources, crafting equipment, and improving abilities will be essential for survival.
However, the ultimate challenge lies in confronting Ashenfall’s dragons. Players will follow a trail of devastation across the continent, uncovering ancient mysteries and learning how to battle increasingly powerful draconic foes.
The journey eventually leads to the Dragon Queen herself, promising an epic endgame challenge for those capable of surviving the harsh wilderness and mastering their skills.
Survival Through Sorcery
One of Dragonwilds’ most unique features is its magical survival system. The continent is infused with Anima energy, allowing players to wield powerful magical abilities that dramatically alter how they interact with the world.
Players can summon spectral tools to gather resources instantly, blink short distances to escape danger, conjure tornadoes filled with fish, and even explode mineral deposits with magical power.
These abilities create a fantasy-focused twist on the survival genre, enabling players to solve problems and gather resources in ways that go far beyond traditional crafting games.
Community Feedback Remains a Priority
Jagex has emphasised that community involvement remains central to Dragonwilds’ ongoing development. Similar to the studio’s approach with other RuneScape titles, player feedback is expected to play a significant role in shaping future updates and improvements.
Whether adventuring solo or exploring Ashenfall with friends, players will have opportunities to help influence the direction of the game as it continues to evolve through Early Access and beyond.
Jagex Discusses the Move to Console
Jesse America, Executive Producer for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, described the PlayStation 5 release as a key step in expanding the franchise’s reach.
According to America, bringing Dragonwilds to PlayStation allows more players around the world to experience its unique blend of crafting, survival mechanics, and classic RuneScape charm.
The addition of a day-one PlayStation Plus release is also expected to introduce the game to a massive new audience when it arrives later this year.
A Big Year for RuneScape
With the RuneScape franchise celebrating its 25th anniversary and Dragonwilds surpassing one million sales during Early Access, 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most significant years in the series’ history.
For PlayStation players who have never experienced RuneScape before, Dragonwilds could provide the perfect introduction to one of gaming’s most enduring fantasy universes.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is available now via Steam Early Access and will launch on PlayStation 5 later this year.
