Jagex, the studio behind RuneScape, has released the final major Early Access update for RuneScape Dragonwilds titled Umbral Sands, marking the last major content drop before the game’s full 1.0 launch on 15th September 2026.
The update gives players an early look at the game’s interpretation of RuneScape’s iconic desert region, introducing new survival mechanics, enemies, and progression systems as the game heads toward its official release on PC and consoles.
RuneScape Dragonwilds – Umbral Sands Gameplay Trailer
Umbral Sands Brings a Harsh New Desert Region
The centrepiece of the update is the Umbral Sands, a vast desert biome designed around dynamic environmental survival systems.
Players must now contend with extreme heat, forcing them to seek shade, construct temporary shelters, or travel at night to avoid the draining effects of the sun.
This adds a new layer of strategy to exploration, as survival becomes just as important as combat and resource gathering in the shifting desert landscape.
New Dragon Boss: Fuzan the Blazing Tyrant
A major new threat arrives in the form of Fuzan, the Blazing Tyrant, a powerful dragon that hunts players after nightfall once the corrupted sun sets over the dunes.
Fuzan is accompanied by red dragon minions, turning the desert into a dangerous hunting ground for unprepared adventurers.
Players can confront this apex predator in the Fight Cave, a replayable encounter featuring waves of enemies, environmental hazards like molten lava, and advanced difficulty modes that offer rare rewards and powerful crafting materials.
Classic RuneScape Items Return in Dragonwilds
The update also introduces several iconic RuneScape materials into Dragonwilds for the first time.
New crafting resources include Adamant, Red Dragonhide, and Yew, allowing players to craft mid-to-high tier gear such as adamant equipment, dragonhide armour, and ranged and magic weapons based on Yew wood.
These additions further align Dragonwilds with the broader RuneScape universe while expanding its crafting and progression systems.
New Mounts and Traversal Options
Traversal in the Umbral Sands is also enhanced with the introduction of magic carpets, which allow players to glide across the desert and navigate hazardous terrain such as quicksand zones.
New customisation options for mounts, including different colour variants, also give players more freedom to personalise their journey across the world.
New Allies, Enemies and Expanding Lore
The desert region introduces a range of new and returning creatures, including kalphites and kot-haar, expanding the enemy variety within Dragonwilds.
Players will also encounter Icthlarin, the Menaphite god of the dead, who can assist adventurers during their journey through the harsh desert environment.
Alongside new enemies and allies, the update continues to build out the world’s lore and ties to classic RuneScape mythology.
Final Early Access Update Before Full Release
Umbral Sands is confirmed as the final major Early Access update before RuneScape: Dragonwilds launches its full 1.0 version on 15th September 2026.
The full release will include additional endgame content such as the Scorned Wilderness Raid and a climactic boss fight against Kuldra, concluding the current storyline.
At launch, the game will arrive on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. It will also support multiple new languages, including Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
