Destiny 2’s Season of the Chosen kicked off last week and with it, we’ve seen a lot of new content added to the game. Empress Caiatl has made an appearance and things have gotten a lot more complicated for Guardians.
So what exactly happened? Well, the easiest way to find out is to watch this season’s trailer below:
Empress Caiatl approached the Vanguard and offered an alliance. Commander Zavala however, declined and now we’ve stepped into another war with the Cabal. Guardians will have access to a brand new area of the Tower known as the H.E.L.M, which is an acronym for the Hub for Emergency and Logistical Maneuvers. The H.E.L.M contains the war table and provides easy access to your vault as well as the postmaster from one convenient location.
Mission briefings regarding the season content will take place at the H.E.L.M and it also contains a brand new Umbral Decoder. The Umbral Decoder was a major part of the Season of the Arrivals allowing Guardians to decrypt mysterious Umbral Engrams into season specific weapons and armour. The decoder was removed when that particular season ended. The Umbral Decoder and the decoding process has now returned but has been slightly changed up for the Season of the Chosen.
Focusing Umbral Engrams changed to a far more tedious and grindy process. Instead of simply being able to pay in some materials and focus an engram to a particular set of weapons or armour or stat focus, you’ll now have to complete specific tasks. These tasks are not outrageously difficult but they are grindy. Getting 300 melee kills or defeating 3000 combatants for example is quite tedious but if you simply just play the game over the course of this season, you’ll unlock these focused engrams quite easily. In fact, that’s exactly what players should be doing. Do not grind these out and instead just unlock them as you play this season. You’ll enjoy the seasonal content far more if you do that.
Players will also gain access to the Hammer of Proving which needs to be charged with a rune paid for with Cabal gold. They can then launch a Battleground, a new 3 player activity much like a strike, and use the hammer to smash a tribute chest for some sweet loot.
All of the above would be fine and dandy if it weren’t for the fact that it just adds an additional activity to grind every week in Destiny. This will get repetitive over time, especially once you’ve exhausted all the new Battlegrounds and they start to repeat themselves.
Season of the Chosen brings back two strikes from Destiny 1 into Destiny 2 but only one of them is currently accessible (Devil’s Lair) with the Fallen Saber strike being added later. Bungie has however added quite a lot of season challenges to the game to keep you busy every week. Whether or not this is seen in a positive light by the Destiny 2 community, remains to be seen.
The seasonal exotic weapon, Ticuu’s Divination, is a brand new bow with arrows that home in on targets. It’s extremely fun hip firing arrows that track targets and exploding them when scoped in is quite satisfying in action. This ain’t no Witherhoard but the bow does have a usage case and players will definitely enjoy using it.
Overall, if you’re new to Destiny 2 Beyond Light, Season of the Chosen might seem extremely confusing and a mixed bag to you. You’d best partner up with a friend of two and get them to explain the game to you because it just got far more complicated this season and newcomers will certainly feel lost.
If you’re a seasoned veteran through and you’re a fan of the Destiny 2 grind, Season of the Chosen amplifies that grind further. It also introduces a lot of great story snippets interspersed throughout the battles with the Cabal. However, with the Darkness Pyramids and Stasis being central to Beyond Light’s story, these battles seem more like a distraction to keep players busy until something much bigger happens. Season of the Chosen is fun but we foresee plenty of complaints setting in quite soon if Bungie doesn’t continuously add more content every week to this season.
Back to the grindstone eh?
