Gaming can be a lot of fun, but sometimes it can begin to feel a little, well, “samey.” Part of the appeal of gaming consoles is that they provide excitement, but that doesn’t mean that they can sustain us forever! And when we begin to feel like that, it can be a little disconcerting. After all, we’ve put up so much time and effort (not to mention money) into our gaming careers, that to suddenly have it be unappealing is concerning. The good news is that, if you don’t want the gaming chapter of your life to be over, then it doesn’t need to be. There are plenty of little ways that you can breathe some life and fire into your passion! Take a read of the tips that we’ve outlined below, and you’ll be well on your way to loving gaming all over again.
Take a Break
Our first suggestion is to simply…take a break! You could love anything, but if you were doing the activity all the time, then it would be normal to begin to feel a little bored. You need time for the desire to fill back up again; you can’t run the well dry! So if you’re getting a little tired of gaming, then just put down the controller and take yourself elsewhere for a few days. You’ll likely find that, by the time that you return, things feel much more exciting. Indeed, sometimes it’s a good idea to take an extended break even if you’re still having fun. Hemingway used to say that he would stop writing when he still had the motivation to keep going, just so the desire and passion never edged too close to empty.
Get an Enviable Setup
You might like the games that you’re playing, but you won’t enjoy it anywhere near as much if you’re playing in a cluttered and undesirable environment. In that scenario, you’d find that you would be much more likely to get a little restless when you were playing. But if it helps: it’s not you, or the games, but the environment in which you’re playing. So take a look at improving things. If you haven’t thought all that much about gaming setup before, then now’s the time. If you have a high-quality desk and chair, good lighting, wires tucked away, and all the other staples of a great gaming setup, then you’ll find that you’re much more able and willing to spend some long hours playing away.
Mix Up the Games
We all have our favourite games. While this can seem like a good thing, it can actually become a negative point, because we fail to see that there are other games out there that we could play too. We just get sucked into this one — likely fantastic — game. All of a sudden, we’re not so much gamers as we are just one trick ponies. So why not look at mixing things up by playing a different game or by buying a new video game item? Yes it can be a little uncomfortable to step into a new game, especially if you have no idea what to do, but you’ll find that you pick it up soon enough — and that you enjoy the game immensely, too. There’s a whole world of games out there!
And The Consoles
Of course, that advice won’t be all that helpful if you’re already on top of all the games that have come out on your chosen console. But then here’s a radical idea: why not look at mixing up the consoles from time to time? We know that people tend to be pretty loyal when it comes to PlayStation and Xbox, but there are others that you can branch out into, as well. For example, what about trying PC gaming, or picking up a Nintendo Switch? Take a read of ‘The Best Nintendo Switch Games, Ranked,’ and you’ll see that there are many excellent gaming options on the latter. You might eventually return to your original console, but you’ll be a better player for having branched out. The different console manufacturers like to talk a lot about the differences between their product and the others, but they share a lot of similarities. In any case, by playing different consoles, you’ll be on your way to understanding the gaming world that little bit more — and that will only have advantages when it comes to your gaming prowess.
Playing With Friends
Everything’s better with friends! It really is. While you might want to keep playing online with strangers, there’s also a lot of power in grabbing your gaming friends and spending some hours doing battle with one another, to no other end than to have fun. This is a bit like, most likely, how you got into gaming in the first place. Who says you can’t rewind the clock and enjoy this type of fun again? In an ideal world, you’d be able to invite your friends around for real-world gaming, but if that’s not possible because of logistics and so forth, then just all agree to be online at the same time — just be sure that everyone’s mics are hooked up so you can interact like you really were all together.
Play the Classics
And talking of rewinding the clock a little, why not dive into the old games that you used to play and love? The thing about the gaming world, in fact, the thing about life, is that it’s always marching forward. We play one game, and then others come out, and then others, and so on. It’s only when a lot of time has passed do we look back and realise that, woah, it’s been years since you played a particular game. A lot of people have a lot of nostalgia for Goldeneye, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, and the early GTA games. And guess what? These games still exist! Load them up and fall back into the wonderful world of your early gaming career. They might just remind you why you fell in love with gaming in the first place.
Get Other Hobbies
All love should be tested from time to time. Do you love gaming because it’s a passion, or because there’s nothing else? There’s only one way to find out — try some other things. If you prefer them, then your gaming life may be winding down. If you still love gaming, then you’ll know that it’s the real deal — it’s a love that’s here to stay.
Take Care of Your Main Duties
Alas, things do change when we get older. When you’re a teenager, your responsibilities basically extend to not being a completely terrible person and doing your best in school. That leaves a lot of time for some fun gaming. When you’re an adult, things aren’t like that — you have duties to take care of. So if you want to enjoy gaming to the fullest, then it’s really important that you’re taking care of those duties first, before you fire up the console. You’ll only feel guilty and under pressure, if you know you shouldn’t be playing. Take care of everything else first, and you’ll be able to play completely relaxed and stress-free — which is how it should be.
Don’t Overthink It
Finally, our last word of advice is not to overthink it. There’s more serious things to worry about than gaming. If you fall out of love with it a little bit, then OK, maybe your attention needs to be elsewhere for a while. The love will likely come back all on its own, in time.
