NACON and ACE Team have officially launched The Mound Omen of Cthulhu, a new cooperative horror adventure that combines Lovecraftian terror, psychological horror, and survival gameplay. The game is available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, complete with full crossplay functionality and Xbox Play Anywhere support.
Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s short story The Mound, players are transported to the age of the Conquistadors, where greed, exploration, and unimaginable horrors collide deep within an uncharted continent.
Journey Into a Forgotten Land
In The Mound Omen of Cthulhu, players form an expedition team of up to four explorers tasked with uncovering a legendary city said to contain untold riches.
Before setting out, teams choose contracts that determine the objectives of each expedition. Their goal is simple on paper: venture into the jungle, gather treasures and resources, and return safely. However, the hostile wilderness quickly proves that survival is anything but guaranteed.
Every mission presents new dangers, hidden secrets, and terrifying encounters that can transform a routine treasure hunt into a desperate fight for survival.
When Sanity Becomes the Enemy
Unlike many co-op horror games where monsters are the primary threat, The Mound Omen of Cthulhu places a strong emphasis on psychological horror.
As players delve deeper into the jungle, their sanity gradually deteriorates. This affects far more than visuals, introducing hallucinations and distorted perceptions that directly impact gameplay and communication.
Players may begin seeing things that are not really there, hearing sounds that mislead them, or misinterpreting threats around them. The result is a constant sense of uncertainty where even trusted teammates may struggle to separate reality from illusion.
This mechanic creates tension not only between players and the environment but also within the team itself.
Death Isn’t Always the End
The jungle’s horrors extend beyond simple survival.
When explorers fall during an expedition, death may not be permanent. Corrupted by the mysterious forces lurking within the wilderness, fallen teammates can return as hostile entities, turning against the very squad they once fought beside.
This unique twist adds another layer of paranoia and unpredictability to each expedition, ensuring that no mission ever feels entirely safe.
Communication Is Essential
At the heart of the experience is cooperation.
The game features a proximity voice chat system that encourages players to stay close together while navigating dangerous environments. Wandering too far from allies can quickly become a fatal mistake, especially when sanity begins to unravel and hostile creatures emerge from the shadows.
Successful expeditions rely on teamwork, resource management, stealth, and effective communication.
Eight Explorers, Four Available at Launch
Players can choose from a roster of eight playable characters, with four available from day one:
- Alonso de la Torre
- Leonor
- Don Rodrigo de Medina
- Fray Gaspar
While each character brings their own personality and appearance to the adventure, all share the same core gameplay mechanics and remain equally vulnerable to the horrors hidden within the jungle.
Period-Accurate Weapons and Limited Resources
Set during the Conquistador era, players must rely on historically inspired weaponry rather than modern firearms.
Available equipment includes:
- Bows
- Crossbows
- Arquebuses
- Various expedition tools and supplies
Ammunition is limited and equipment is fragile, forcing players to carefully consider every encounter rather than charging headfirst into danger.
Explore 18 Handcrafted Maps
At launch, players can explore 18 handcrafted maps designed to create a dense, atmospheric, and oppressive sense of exploration.
According to ACE Team, every location has been individually crafted to maximise immersion and reinforce the game’s unsettling tone.
From dense jungle pathways to forgotten ruins and hidden chambers, each expedition offers opportunities to uncover secrets and valuable rewards.
Unlock New Areas Through Exploration
Progression in The Mound Omen of Cthulhu revolves around discovering the remains of previous expeditions.
Players must recover lost logbooks and successfully extract them from the jungle to unlock new regions and deeper sections of the map. This creates a strong sense of progression while encouraging exploration and risk-taking.
A Fresh Take on Lovecraftian Co-op Horror
While many multiplayer horror games focus on jump scares or asymmetrical gameplay, The Mound Omen of Cthulhu appears to be carving out its own identity through psychological horror, sanity mechanics, and cooperative exploration.
The combination of Lovecraft-inspired storytelling, resource management, proximity-based communication, and the constant threat of corruption creates a unique experience where players must battle both external monsters and their own fragile minds.
For fans of cooperative horror and cosmic terror, this could be one of the more intriguing releases of the year.
The Mound Omen of Cthulhu is available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S with full crossplay support. Physical editions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S will arrive on August 6.
