As one of the best-selling games of all time, along with other legendary titles like Tetris and Grand Theft Auto V, Minecraft continues generating impressive profit from its huge player base.

In an increasingly mobile gaming world, Minecraft developers, Mojang, had to find a way to keep their fans happy while they were on the go. As a result, they released the Pocket Edition of Minecraft for Android and Apple iOS in late 2011.
While the core of the game remained the same, the mobile version introduced survival elements and allowed players to engage in multiplayer games across different platforms. Minecraft mobile became an instant hit and ranked as the top gaming app among boys in 2015. Statistics show that players worldwide spent $81.6 million on the in-app purchase that year. By 2019, this figure jumped to $110.9 million and continued growing.
As the entire mobile gaming industry boomed amid the lockdowns, revenues jumped by another $31.7 million in 2020, the highest annual increase in the game’s history.
Last year, the popular game set another record. In May 2020, Mojang, announced that Minecraft’s lifetime sales hit 200 million units, ranking it above other legendary games including Grand Theft Auto V, Tetris, and Wii Sports.
Number of Active Monthly Players Hit 140 Million in Q1 2021
Due to players’ creative freedom and the various ways the game can develop, Minecraft remained popular even nine years after its release. In June 2016, the popular game hit 40 million active monthly players, and the number continued growing ever since.
By October 2018, the number of Minecraft players jumped over 91 million. In May 2020, this figure rose to 126 million. Statistics show that as of March 2021, there were 140 million active Minecraft players worldwide, more than double the 2018 figure.
