Saber Interactive has released the new Waves of Lead update for World War Z, bringing a collection of new weapons, perks, mutators and customisation options to the co-op zombie shooter.
The free update is available now for all players on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam and the Epic Games Store. Alongside the free content, Saber has also released the premium Valhalla Raider Weapon Skin Pack for players looking to give their arsenal a new look.
World War Z Adds New Heavy Weapon Perks
Waves of Lead introduces six new heavy weapon perks, with one available for each of the game’s heavy weapons.
Last Exhaust gives players using the SchreiTech Forest Warrior chainsaw a three-second camouflage effect when its fuel runs out. Pillbox prevents players from being grabbed while aiming the MAG5 machinegun.
The Hailstorm MGL receives Cluster Bombs, replacing standard grenades with cluster bombs. The initial blast radius is reduced by 50%, but the explosion scatters smaller explosive charges that detonate one second later.
Dragon Breath Shells gives the Taiga-12 heavy assault shotgun incendiary ammunition, although its total ammunition capacity is reduced by 30%.
The BF25 payload rifle receives Two-layer Bullet, allowing bullets to pierce through the first Zeke before continuing towards another target and exploding after hitting it. Total ammunition capacity is reduced by 30% with the perk equipped.
Finally, White Phosphorus loads the MRL202 Commando rocket launcher with incendiary ammunition capable of affecting a large area and setting enemies within its radius on fire, without leaving a burning pool behind.
Five New Mutators Added
The update also introduces five new mutators that can change how players approach their next run.
Paranoid’s Reserves is a permanent mutator that means equipment crates can potentially be booby-trapped. All-In reduces the maximum health of both survivors and zombies to one while cutting the overall time required to return to combat in half. Survivors can also be incapacitated an unlimited number of times and get back on their feet faster.
Let Them Dance increases damage dealt to Zekes’ legs while reducing damage from hits elsewhere on their bodies. Sharp Shards causes explosions from devices and heavy weapons to inflict bleeding.
Meanwhile, Leaky Backpack introduces an appropriately frustrating problem: players slowly lose ammunition whenever they are grabbed.
Extinction Mode Comes to The Walking Dead Episode
One of the bigger additions in Waves of Lead is the arrival of Extinction Mode in the World War Z x The Walking Dead crossover episode.
Owners of the DLC can now tackle the extreme difficulty mode across locations from the crossover campaign, including the Prison, Alexandria Safe Zone and Grady Memorial Hospital.
Instead of World War Z’s usual hordes of faster-moving Zekes, players will be facing The Walking Dead‘s iconic slow-moving Walkers while attempting to survive the increased challenge.
New Weapons Join the Arsenal
Waves of Lead also adds two new weapons for players to unlock and use in combat: the double-barrelled Bullpup Shotgun and the Gas Pipe Wrench melee weapon.
Players can also unlock three new custom frames as part of the update.
Valhalla Raider Weapon Skin Pack
Alongside the free update, Saber Interactive has released the premium Valhalla Raider Weapon Skin Pack for $4.99.
The pack gives five weapons a new runic steel-inspired appearance, including the Geist 17 machine pistol, ARK-103 assault rifle, BSG-12 bullpup shotgun, Paladin LMG light automatic rifle and Taiga-12 heavy assault shotgun.
World War Z Continues to Expand
Powered by Saber’s Swarm Engine, World War Z can be played solo alongside AI squadmates or cooperatively with up to four players, with full crossplay between PC and consoles.
The game throws large numbers of zombies at players across locations including New York, Moscow, Jerusalem, Tokyo, Marseille, Rome and Vatican City, and the Kamchatka peninsula, alongside DLC campaigns set in Las Vegas, Arizona and the world of AMC’s The Walking Dead.
With new weapons, six heavy weapon perks, five mutators and Extinction Mode for the Walking Dead crossover, the free Waves of Lead update gives returning players plenty of new ways to make their next run considerably more unpleasant.
