Apidya’ Special, a full ground-up remake of the beloved 1992 Amiga shoot-’em-up, is heading to modern platforms this month. Developed by Team Apidya and published by ININ Games, the remake will launch digitally on 25 August 2026.
The remake will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch players in Europe and Xbox players can already pre-order the game, while PC players can add it to their Steam wishlist.

A Ground-Up Remake of an Amiga Classic
Originally released in 1992, Apidya became known for its distinctive insect-themed fantasy setting, challenging shoot-’em-up gameplay and memorable soundtrack.
Apidya’ Special completely rebuilds the game from the ground up rather than relying on emulation. The result is designed to retain the spirit of the original while introducing modern presentation options and new gameplay features.
Players can switch between a modern HD widescreen presentation and the classic 4:3 aspect ratio at any time. Optional CRT shaders, bloom effects and accurate scanline simulation can also be enabled for players wanting an authentic retro presentation.
The remake will also feature enhanced graphics that were originally created for an unreleased console version of Apidya. These visuals are now being made publicly available for the first time.
Five Worlds and 20 Bosses
Apidya’ Special features five themed worlds, with each world containing up to five levels.
- Meadow
- Pond
- Sewers
- Cyber
- Lair
Across these environments, players will encounter 20 unique bosses alongside hidden special stages designed to reward exploration and skilled players.
The remake also introduces randomised events, including the Night Mode, which changes enemy designs and adds another layer of unpredictability to subsequent playthroughs.
New Co-Op Mode
One of the biggest additions in Apidya’ Special is a brand-new co-op mode.
A second player can join the adventure and take control of a fully featured bee character equipped with its own weapons and abilities. This gives players a new way to experience the game’s challenging shoot-’em-up action together.
Chris Hülsbeck’s Music Returns
Music remains an important part of the Apidya experience, and Apidya’ Special includes an extensive collection from celebrated composer Chris Hülsbeck.
The package features the original Amiga recordings alongside remastered versions and brand-new studio arrangements, providing a substantial soundtrack that celebrates the game’s original audio while giving it a modern treatment.
Modern Difficulty and Accessibility Options
While Apidya’ Special remains faithful to the challenging nature of the original game, the remake also introduces modernised difficulty settings.
These options are designed to make the game more accessible to players of different skill levels, meaning newcomers can experience the adventure without necessarily facing the same level of difficulty as veteran shoot-’em-up players.
Apidya’ Special Release Date
Apidya’ Special launches digitally on 25 August 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
Pre-orders are already available for Nintendo Switch through the European eShop and Xbox, while PC players can wishlist the game on Steam ahead of launch.
With its combination of completely rebuilt visuals, optional retro presentation, new co-op gameplay, additional events and an expanded soundtrack, Apidya’ Special aims to give fans of the original Amiga game a new way to experience the classic while introducing it to a new generation.
Apidya’ Special at Gamescom 2026
Team Apidya will also be attending Gamescom 2026 in Cologne from 26–30 August.
The team will be located in Hall 10.2, Booth 6-8 in the retro area, where attendees will have the opportunity to meet the developers, celebrate the game’s launch week and pick up limited goodies while supplies last.
