BioEden is one of those games that doesn’t exactly scream for your attention. There are no enormous explosions, no angry space marines, no giant swords and certainly nobody shouting at you that the fate of humanity depends on what you do in the next thirty seconds.
Instead, BioEden gives you a broken planet, some rather lovely animals, a collection of resources and a very simple request: please stop making the place look like absolute shit.
Developed by Broken Arms Games and published by Focus Entertainment, BioEden is a cosy management and simulation game about restoring a barren planet and bringing extinct animal species back to life. You take on the role of a Keeper, rebuilding ecosystems, managing resources, connecting power and water networks and gradually transforming a wasteland into something resembling an actual paradise.
And after spending time with it, I have to say that there is something rather bloody lovely about watching a dead planet slowly come back to life.
What Is BioEden?
At its heart, BioEden is a management game with a very strong environmental theme. You begin with a barren world that is in desperate need of some attention and gradually turn it into a functioning ecosystem.
That means gathering resources, constructing buildings, managing energy and water, restoring damaged environments and creating suitable habitats for different animal species.
The big difference compared with many management games is the atmosphere. BioEden isn’t interested in making you feel like an overworked middle manager who has just discovered that the electricity bill is due.
It wants you to relax.
There is no constant pressure to race against the clock and, importantly, actions can be reversed through the recycling system. That makes experimentation considerably less intimidating than it can be in more hardcore management games.
Bringing a Dead Planet Back to Life
The central idea behind BioEden is wonderfully straightforward.
You start with a planet that is largely barren and begin rebuilding it piece by piece. You’ll search for resources, recycle old structures, build new facilities and gradually establish the infrastructure required to support your growing ecosystem.
Power and water are particularly important because your various buildings need to be connected into functioning networks.
It sounds relatively simple, and for the most part it is. That isn’t necessarily a criticism either.
There are plenty of management games that seem determined to throw twelve different resource types, five currencies, three technology trees and a spreadsheet at you before you’ve even worked out how to build a house.
BioEden takes a much more sensible approach.
You learn the systems gradually and then start expanding them as the planet becomes more complicated.
Building Your Own Ecosystem
The most interesting part of BioEden for me is the way the different systems begin to connect together.
Your domes aren’t simply decorative buildings. They form part of the wider ecosystem and need to be planned around the requirements of the animals and environments you are trying to create.
Different species have different requirements, including things such as temperature, humidity and vegetation. You’ll collect DNA samples and then work towards creating the right conditions before introducing these creatures into their new homes.
It gives the game a nice sense of progression because you’re not simply putting down buildings for the sake of putting down buildings. There is always a reason behind what you’re doing.
Eventually, you begin to see the results of all that work.
A previously lifeless section of the planet starts becoming greener. Water becomes cleaner. Wildlife begins appearing. Your little pockets of civilisation start to feel like genuine ecosystems rather than collections of buildings sitting on an empty map.
That transformation is easily one of BioEden’s biggest strengths.
The Animals Are Probably Going to Steal Your Attention
Let’s be honest here. Half the reason you’re going to spend time restoring this planet is because you want to see the bloody animals.
BioEden includes dozens of species that have their own environmental requirements, meaning you need to think about what each creature needs rather than simply dumping every animal into the same habitat.
It is a clever way of making the ecological theme part of the actual gameplay rather than simply using it as a backdrop.
You’re constantly working towards making the environment suitable enough for another species to return, which gives your progression a very tangible purpose.
Management Without the Headache
One of the things I appreciate about BioEden is that it doesn’t appear desperate to punish you.
Management games can sometimes become exercises in failure. You make one mistake, your economy collapses, your power network stops functioning and suddenly you’re staring at a screen wondering where the last two hours of your life went.
BioEden is much more forgiving.
The ability to recycle buildings means you can experiment with layouts and change your mind without feeling like you’ve completely screwed your planet over.
That fits the game’s overall philosophy perfectly.
This is supposed to be a relaxing experience, and the mechanics generally support that idea rather than constantly fighting against it.
Exploration Adds More Than You Might Expect
BioEden isn’t purely about staring at menus and placing buildings.
You can wander around the planet, explore the environment and discover more about what happened to this world. There is also the mystery surrounding the Great Unraveling, which gives the game something to work towards beyond simply making your little corner of the planet look pretty.
I like this because it breaks up the management side of the experience.
There is something satisfying about stepping away from your carefully planned networks and simply wandering around the world you’ve been rebuilding.
It Looks Lovely Without Trying to Break Your PC
Visually, BioEden takes a colourful and stylised approach rather than attempting to compete with the latest big-budget releases.
That is absolutely the right decision.
The bright colours and clean visual design make it easy to understand what is happening around you, even as your planet becomes increasingly busy.
More importantly, there is a very obvious visual difference between a barren environment and one that has been successfully restored.
You can actually see your progress.
That sounds like a small thing, but it matters enormously in a management game. If I spend hours building something and the end result looks almost identical to where I started, what’s the bloody point?
BioEden makes the transformation obvious.
Where BioEden Starts to Show Its Limitations
BioEden isn’t perfect, and this is where expectations need to be kept in check.
The core systems are enjoyable, but they aren’t particularly deep compared with some of the more hardcore management and simulation games available on PC.
Some of the environmental restoration mechanics can feel relatively straightforward once you’ve understood what the game wants from you. There is also a degree of repetition as you continue expanding your planet and working through the various systems.
That isn’t necessarily a deal breaker because BioEden isn’t trying to be Cities: Skylines with a collection of cute animals attached to it.
But if you’re looking for an incredibly deep simulation where you’re constantly analysing dozens of interconnected systems, this probably isn’t going to scratch that particular itch.
The visual variety can also feel limited in places, particularly once you’ve spent a considerable amount of time working within the same types of environments and structures. Some quality-of-life features could also be stronger, especially for players who want more automation as their planet becomes increasingly complex.
These are fairly reasonable criticisms, though, because they don’t really undermine what BioEden is trying to achieve.
The Relaxing Nature of BioEden Is Its Biggest Strength
I think this is where BioEden gets things particularly right.
There are enough management mechanics here to make you think, but it doesn’t constantly feel like you’re being tested.
You can take your time.
You can experiment.
You can move things around.
You can explore.
And, most importantly, you can simply watch the world change.
That makes BioEden a very different proposition from the games I normally spend my time playing. I’m usually smashing something, shooting something, sneaking around somewhere or trying not to get killed by something considerably larger than me.
BioEden is basically the gaming equivalent of someone handing me a cup of tea and telling me to calm the fuck down.
And sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
How Long Is BioEden?
According to the developers, the main experience takes around 15 to 20 hours to complete, although players who want to take things more slowly and simply enjoy restoring the planet can spend considerably longer with it.
That feels like a sensible length for this type of game.
BioEden isn’t trying to become a 100-hour commitment where you’re still building the same bloody power network three months later. Instead, it gives you a manageable journey with plenty of room to relax and experiment.
Is BioEden Worth Playing?
Yes, particularly if you enjoy management games but don’t necessarily want something that feels like doing unpaid administrative work.
BioEden has a very clear identity. It is colourful, relaxing, approachable and surprisingly satisfying when you start seeing your barren planet turn into a living ecosystem.
The management systems aren’t deep enough to satisfy everyone, and some of the repetition and limited variety can become noticeable, but the overall package works because the game understands what it wants to be.
It isn’t trying to stress you out.
It isn’t trying to bury you beneath spreadsheets.
It simply wants you to take a broken planet and make it beautiful again.
Verdict
BioEden isn’t going to replace the biggest and deepest management simulators on the market, but that’s completely fine because it isn’t trying to.
Instead, it offers a much more relaxed experience where the reward comes from watching something you’ve built actually make a difference.
There is something surprisingly satisfying about taking a barren, lifeless planet and slowly turning it into a functioning ecosystem filled with wildlife.
It could certainly benefit from deeper systems, more variety and additional quality-of-life features, but the foundations are solid and the overall experience is incredibly easy to settle into.
If you’ve spent enough time this year shooting people in the face, getting murdered by enormous monsters or wandering around worlds determined to kill you, BioEden might be exactly the change of pace you didn’t realise you needed.
Sometimes saving the world doesn’t require a massive sword.
Sometimes you just need to plant a few bloody trees.
