Aniplex has confirmed that Fate/EXTRA Record will launch on 28 January 2027, bringing the completely rebuilt version of the original Fate/EXTRA RPG to modern platforms.
Originally released in 2010, Fate/EXTRA was the first RPG in the Fate series. Rather than simply remastering the original, Fate/EXTRA Record has been extensively recreated with new story content, redesigned characters and a more strategic deck-building combat system.
The game will launch on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam, with four different editions available for players to choose from.
Fate/EXTRA Record Is a Complete Recreation
For fans who played the original Fate/EXTRA, Fate/EXTRA Record isn’t simply the same RPG with a fresh coat of paint.
Aniplex has rebuilt the game for modern platforms while adding new content throughout the experience. Character designs have been redrawn, additional story content has been introduced and the original battle system has been reworked into a more strategic deck-building command battle system.
The aim is to retain the identity of the original while giving players something that feels considerably fresher than a straightforward remake.
A Holy Grail War on the Moon
The story takes place inside SE.RA.PH, a virtual world constructed on the Moon following the discovery of a supercomputer capable of granting almost any desire.
At the centre of it all is the Moon Cell, which possesses the Holy Grail, an omnipotent wish-granting device. Naturally, having something capable of granting any wish is going to cause a few problems.
A total of 128 Masters enter the Holy Grail War, each commanding a Servant based on a hero from human history. Every Master has their own reason for entering the competition, with their ultimate goal being ownership of the Holy Grail.
The result is a brutal tournament in which players must survive seven rounds of combat while uncovering the identities and weaknesses of their opponents.
You Play a Master with No Memory
Players take on the role of a second-year high school student attending Tsukumihara Academy, although there’s an immediate problem: your character has no memory of who they are.
Accompanied by a single Servant, players must fight their way through the Holy Grail War while attempting to uncover the truth behind their identity and the conflict itself.
Combat revolves around deck-building command cards, allowing players to build combinations and exploit weaknesses rather than simply relying on brute force.
The game also features the Mystic Code, which can provide additional assistance during battles, while identifying an enemy’s true name can reveal their weakness and provide a crucial advantage.

IGC Take: This Is the Fate/EXTRA We Never Got in the West
There’s something particularly appealing about Fate/EXTRA Record because it isn’t trying to pretend the original game didn’t exist. Instead, it looks like Aniplex is taking the foundations of the 2010 RPG and asking what it could have been with modern technology, a larger budget and the benefit of 16 years of hindsight.
The original Fate/EXTRA is an important part of the franchise’s RPG history, but its age is becoming increasingly obvious. A full recreation with redesigned characters, additional story material and a more sophisticated combat system makes far more sense than simply putting the original game back on sale.
The deck-building combat could also be the real star. Fate has always been packed with characters possessing wildly different abilities, weapons and fighting styles, so building a deck around those strengths and learning an opponent’s weaknesses could make the Holy Grail War feel considerably more tactical.
And then there’s the setting. A Holy Grail War taking place inside a virtual world constructed on the Moon is exactly the sort of wonderfully bonkers premise that makes Fate so much fun.
With the January 2027 release date now locked in, Fate/EXTRA Record is finally looking like the definitive way to experience this particular chapter of the franchise. Whether you’re a returning Master or completely new to the EXTRA timeline, there could be plenty here worth fighting for.
