Let me begin by telling you a story of loss, searching and a small-but happy-victory.

So, you know how the story goes; you have a perfectly fine, wipe-clean, spill-resistant desk mat, but even this can only take so much Diet Coke spillage before you have to bite the bullet and search for its replacement. You fire up Amazon, pop in the term ‘XL Desk Mat’ and find yourself the recipient of more results than you can shake a stick at. You look to the customer reviews and find that, much to your surprise, one of the best reviewed options available to you is also one of the cheapest…

You decide to take the risk, you go in, and you wait for the courier to arrive at your door the next day. You open the package, inspect the product and, without a second thought, you know you have to review this desk mat for the people. This reaction can mean only two things; either the product is very poor or very impressive. In the case of the Regnum Extended Mouse Pad from Spigen, I was surprised and elated to find that the latter was, in fact, the case.

And so, to business. I will be honest with you from the off here; I had never heard of Spigen as a company, and truly did not know what to expect from the Regnum Extended Mouse Pad aside from what I was reading in the customer reviews. I was apprehensive, to be sure, especially with a price tag of just £9.99 (at the time of purchase). The same product from a “known” brand would have cost me several times this amount. Combine that with an average of 4.8 out of 5 in the Amazon reviews, not a single one of which was under a 3, and frankly I thought this was too good to be true. I feel that I have to apologise for that assertion, as from the moment I saw the packaging upon arrival I new I had hit on a winner.

If a company selling a product of this kind so cheaply can hit the proverbial nail on the head when it comes to their branding, you have to wonder why they aren’t asking for more. Looking at the box, you would not have guessed that the actual value of its contents was so low. Continue to open said packaging and inspect its contents, and the mat rolled cleanly out, despite its 910 x 305mm dimensions, with none of the usual rubbery smell nor any time wasted trying to get it to lay flat on a desk. At first glance, the quality of the materials also seemed outstanding, with a smooth, clean finish on the surface and well-crafted edges to combat against any fraying over time. First impressions were strong.

Once my mouse and keyboard were on the mat, I quickly noticed the difference in size between this and my previous Aukey mouse pad. The 305mm vertical measurement was maybe a little smaller than what I would have liked, leaving some of my desk looking somewhat bare. This is, of course, a matter of personal preference, and the product would undoubtedly do its job well on a lower-profile workspace. The deep black colour, however, was exactly what I wanted, and the minimalist logo was easy to ignore once gaming was afoot. There was also plenty of horizontal space left over for my phone and bric-a-brac to sit on the edge nearby.

The real test, of course, would come once the games had begun. I tested the mouse pad the only way I truly knew how; Rainbow Six Siege. With over 700 hours in the game, I knew I would quickly notice any differences in my usual experience. Having collaborated my Logitech G502 to the new surface, I was ready to begin. Initial signs seemed positive; the mouse glided easily and smoothly over the surface with only a little more resistance than what I was used to. There was plenty of space to move it about in, without risk of sliding of the mat’s edge, and the mouse sensor seemed to be responding perfectly well in all areas. After a little additional time, I adapted to the slightly different surface with ease, largely forgetting that I had changed it at all. Once again returning to the price of the product, I was very impressed with this result.

Aside from a few minor, personal preference factors playing against it, the Spigen Regnum Extended Mouse Pad is a very impressive accessory for its price tag. With very minimal difference between this and some of its much more expensive competition, there is really no reason to look higher up the food chain for a similar yet only equally-as-good solution. If you are looking for the best combination of quality and bang-for-buck, the Spigen mouse pad is an easy winner in my books.
