As one of the leading gaming companies for the mobile world, King has witnessed substantial growth in revenue and the number of users over the years. In 2020, the Candy Crush Saga maker generated over $2.1bn in revenue, the second-largest value in the company`s history. However, the positive trend continued in the first months of 2021, with the gaming developer setting a new record.
According to data presented by SafeBettingSites.com, King’s revenue jumped by 22% YoY to $609 million between January and March 2021, the highest quarterly figure in years.
Revenues Rise, Number of Users Slightly Dropped
The more than tenfold increase of King’s revenue between 2012 and 2013 is down to just one game, Candy Crush Saga. The puzzle game became an overnight sensation reaching millions of users across the world.
While the game itself is free-to-play, users can make in-game purchases to help them get past certain levels. This is where King’s micro-transaction revenue model truly paid off as player spending in Candy Crush mobile games worldwide hit over $1.4bn in 2018.
The company’s earnings report revealed that between 2017 and 2019, King`s annual revenue was floating around the two-billion figure. As the entire gaming industry boomed amid the lockdowns, revenues jumped by 6% YoY to over $2.1bn in 2020. Between January and March this year, the game developer generated $609 million, or nearly 30% of total revenues last year.
Although King’s revenue and income have been continually growing since the company was acquired by Activision Blizzard in 2016, the MAU figure was steadily falling over the last few years. After reaching an all-time high of 550 million monthly active users at the beginning of 2015, this figure halved to 250 million by the end of 2019.
In the first quarter of 2020, the number of users jumped to 273 million, and then continued falling to 240 million in the last quarter of the year. Statistics show that in Q1 2021, King had 258 million monthly active users, 6% less compared to the same period a year ago.
Candy Crush Saga Hit $1.66B in Revenue and 160M Downloads in 2020
Despite the fast-paced nature of mobile gaming and the huge number of new releases, Candy Crush Saga still remains one of the most popular free-to-play games on the market. In 2020, the popular title ranked seventh on the list of top-grossing mobile games worldwide, with $1.66bn in revenue. Also, the game was downloaded over 160 million times last year, 3.5x more than Candy Crush Soda Saga, as the King’s second most downloaded title.
The popular mobile game was the second-leading title in Google Play Store in April, with 21.3 million daily active users. Statistics show Candy Crush Saga also ranked as the fourth most popular iPhone gaming app that month, with over 3.7 million daily active users.
