Being a fan of receiving giant parcels, I was already happy with the wrapped box. Opening it revealed the white HyperX Cloud headset, which made me even happier. I was really excited to test it out, especially considering the fact that the only headset I had compatible with my PS4 was the one included in the box. A headset which, if I may, is as useful in your ear as it is out. The mic don’t always works, the earphone is really uncomfortable and worst of all, it fits really badly in your ear, when it fits because most of the time it kept falling off. But after unpacking the headset and connecting it to my PlayStation 4 with the appropriate jack included in the box, which turns two pins into one, I did not hear the sound.
The lack of sound was not a fault of the headset, but it was my error, since apparently I had changed a setting which switched what type of audio is transferred to the headphones, if only party audio or all, so be careful to not commit my mistake before panicking. After changing that option, the sound instantly came to my ears, and what sound it was. The Halleluiah choir to be more precise. Testing it out with Assassin’s Creed Black Flag was a great decision, since all the ambient sound of the game which is generally lost from the TV’s speaker to me is suddenly all in my ears. The small noise outside, the people and even Kenway’s running seem interesting, because of the difference the sound effects do for the game and also because of the clarity of the headset.
Connecting it to a computer yields the same results, meaning that as what regards music, the sound is as good as ingame in terms of clarity, and the headphones has a lot of bass so drum and bass and Dubstep lovers will no doubt enjoy. The HyperX Cloud, being able to connect to various devices supporting 3.5mm audio jack, is also a neat fit for smart phones. Not being excessively bulky means that you can carry the headset wherever you want, including long trips on the bus, which are the perfect location to bust out a movie to enjoy. For this aim, a small pouch is also included, which is perfect for carrying the headset around. I personally found them hard to remove from my phone because of how comfortable they are and how good the sound is, especially when sitting relaxed in bed watching anime.
As far as commodity, the headset is very comfortable because of the material of the ear pads, which are also interchangeable with another pair included in the box. This means that one can wear it for a pretty long time, in my case over 5 hours, before it tires you out. Being pretty light means that you will not put your neck under any strain because of weight. The headset is also adjustable in terms of height, so people with a biggish head like me can adjust their headset accordingly. The size of the headset as mentioned above is also very compact and is not bulky at all so you can easily put it aside. The extensions included in the box are also great for connecting the headset directly to the TV since the wire can span well over 3 metres. One of the extensions features also a soundbox from where one can increase or decrease the volume. You can also use the button on the soundbox to answer or hang up a call when connected to a mobile device. This feature will no doubt appeal more to connecting these to your smartphones, as these features, even though minimal, can come in handy in particular situations. This button can also stop and play music playing from the smart phone as well, so it can be defined as a multiuse button even though there are only these two uses.
The microphone is technically half of the headset even though it is overlooked for more sound-related testing and ratings, and thus some headsets get good ratings while having a disastrous mic. This is not the case here as the HyperX Cloud has a very good microphone, which is also removable by the way, thanks to a jack inserted through the left of the headset. The audio is clear and is heard well, even with noise in the background. Testing it out in the vicinity of a fan, the sound was clear and every word was understandable.
Ultimately, being their first headset on the market, Kingston has done an incredibly good job assembling one of the best headsets available today. The combination of the beautiful sound, its sexy exterior and the comfort of the ear pads gently grazing your ears is a match made in heaven. The research conducted on the project has definitely paid off since there are no real weaknesses to the headset apart from normal constraints or limitations. If there is more to come from Kingston as far as headsets are concerned, one can only wonder what the added experience may create this time around.
