Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 has officially wrapped up, and Geoff Keighley’s annual showcase once again delivered a huge collection of new game announcements, release dates, gameplay reveals, returning franchises and a few surprises that nobody saw coming.
From the unexpected announcement of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered to a fresh look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation, a release date for Path of Exile 2, new footage of Gears of War: E-Day and the reveal of several completely new games, there was plenty for gamers to take away from the two-hour event.
There was also plenty happening before the main presentation even began, with the Opening Night Live pre-show introducing several additional games and updates.
Rather than simply running through trailers in the order they appeared, we’ve pulled together the biggest announcements from the entire Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 presentation and explained what each one means for players.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered Is Coming as a Free Upgrade
It would be difficult for anything else to steal the spotlight from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered.
CD Projekt surprised viewers by announcing a substantial remaster of its hugely popular open-world RPG, with the new version scheduled to arrive on September 29, 2026.
The most important part of the announcement is that existing owners will not have to buy the game again. The remastered version is being offered as a free upgrade to people who already own the game.
The update brings a collection of visual and gameplay improvements, alongside features including armour transmogrification, improved handling for Roach and further enhancements designed to bring the classic RPG up to date for modern hardware.
CD Projekt also announced that the existing expansions will become free for owners, making this a particularly generous update for anyone who has already spent hundreds of hours exploring the Continent.
The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past Expansion Announced
As if a remastered version of The Witcher 3 wasn’t enough, CD Projekt had another surprise waiting.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past is a brand-new expansion that will bring Geralt back for another adventure in 2027.
The teaser showed Geralt exploring a new region, battling unfamiliar monsters and making use of a rather unusual new weapon. The footage suggests that CD Projekt is aiming to create another substantial story rather than simply offering a small additional questline.
What makes the announcement particularly interesting is that the expansion is being developed with members of the original game’s development team involved, giving the project a direct connection to the team that helped make The Witcher 3 such a landmark RPG.
For fans who thought Geralt’s main story had already reached its conclusion, it looks like there is still another journey waiting for him.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation Shows Off Its Massive Weapons
Final Fantasy VII Revelation received one of the biggest gameplay showcases of the night.
The final entry in the modern Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy is currently targeting Spring 2027, and Square Enix used Gamescom to show off some of the enormous threats Cloud and his companions will face.
The trailer focused heavily on the legendary Weapons, gigantic creatures from the original Final Fantasy VII that have been reimagined for the modern trilogy.
These encounters look set to provide some of the game’s biggest challenges, with the trailer showing battles taking place across deserts, in the air and beneath the sea.
The presentation also revealed additional gameplay systems, including open-world traversal using Chocobos, parachuting and a grappling hook.
A new Summon called Typhon was also shown, while the new FITS system will allow Cloud, Tifa and other characters to use specialised outfits that provide new abilities and enhance their combat roles.
With Sephiroth still looming over the story, Revelation is shaping up to be an enormous conclusion to Square Enix’s ambitious remake project.
Gears of War: E-Day Gets a New Story Trailer
Gears of War: E-Day received a new trailer during the showcase, offering another look at the prequel’s story.
The game takes players back to the origins of the Locust invasion, focusing on Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago during the catastrophic events of Emergence Day.

Rather than continuing the series timeline, E-Day gives The Coalition an opportunity to revisit the beginning of the conflict that defined the franchise.
Nodus Fall Is a Very Different HoYoverse Game
HoYoverse opened the main show with a surprise.
Nodus Fall is a new co-op action game that looks considerably darker than the colourful worlds normally associated with the studio behind Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail.
The reveal trailer immediately stood out thanks to its darker fantasy atmosphere, monsters and intense combat.
Rather than following the familiar formula of HoYoverse’s biggest games, Nodus Fall appears to be moving into much more dangerous territory, combining large-scale monsters with action-focused gameplay.

What Were the Biggest Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 Announcements?
There was no shortage of contenders, but a handful of announcements clearly stood above the rest.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered was arguably the biggest surprise. A free upgrade for existing owners, combined with a new expansion, is a remarkable way for CD Projekt to revisit one of the most celebrated RPGs ever made.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation was another major highlight. The latest trailer finally gave fans a much better idea of how Square Enix intends to handle the enormous Weapons and the wider world in the concluding chapter of the remake trilogy.
For action RPG fans, Path of Exile 2 finally receiving its 1.0 date is huge news, while Gears of War: E-Day now has a firm October launch date.
There were also some genuinely intriguing new projects. Nodus Fall, Tides of Annihilation, 1001 Threads of Mizan, Afterworld, Ontos and No Law all have the potential to become major talking points as more information emerges.
Gamescom 2026 Has Set Up a Huge 2027
If there was one clear message from Opening Night Live, it is that the next generation of major releases is already taking shape.
While there are still plenty of games arriving throughout the remainder of 2026, the showcase was packed with projects targeting 2027.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Metro 2039, Exodus, Turok: Origins, Rainbow Six Tactics, The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, Heroes of Might & Magic III Remake and Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons are just some of the projects now sitting on the horizon.
And that is before considering everything that will inevitably be announced during the rest of Gamescom week.
Our Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 Verdict
I’ll be completely honest: Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 was a disappointment for me.
Compared with previous years, this year’s show felt noticeably lacking. In past years, I’ve been glued to the screen from start to finish, genuinely excited to see what Geoff Keighley and the teams behind the event had lined up. There have been years where the two hours have absolutely flown by because there was announcement after announcement that I couldn’t wait to see.
This year was very different.
At several points, I found myself struggling to stay awake because there simply wasn’t much that I was personally excited about. That’s not to say there weren’t some good announcements, because there absolutely were. The problem was that, for me, there weren’t enough of them to maintain that excitement throughout the entire show.
The games that genuinely caught my attention were Gears of War: E-Day, the announcement that Path of Exile 2 is finally heading towards its full 1.0 release, Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, and, of course, the two huge The Witcher 3 announcements: the remaster and the brand-new Songs of the Past expansion.
Those were the moments where I actually sat up and paid attention.
Everything else felt much more hit-and-miss. There were certainly interesting games on display, and I’m sure plenty of viewers will have found announcements that they are incredibly excited about. That’s the great thing about these showcases: what leaves one person cold can be someone else’s game of the year.
But speaking purely from my own perspective as someone who has watched and enjoyed Opening Night Live over the years, this was one of the weaker shows.
In previous years, I would have happily sat through another two hours after the presentation finished. This time around, honestly, I would rather have spent those two hours in bed.
That’s probably the biggest compliment I can give to the handful of games that did grab my attention, because they were the moments that stopped the show from becoming a complete write-off for me.
Hopefully the rest of Gamescom 2026 has a few more surprises in store, because Opening Night Live certainly didn’t leave me with the same excitement I’ve had after previous years.
