Gameplay
Need For Speed Shift 2 Unleashed incorporates a very fast and frenzy game play, which will keep you in the heat of the moment at all times. The aim of the game is to become one of the world’s top racers. You will as usual start the game with a standard vehicle earning yourself xp points and cash and also unlocking some bonus drifting stages. Bonus XP can be gained by completing 3 set targets in a race, using the cash to upgrade is where the game gets interesting. You can upgrade and fine tune your car to the highest possible spec with just some simple upgrades or you could purchase the full factory works, either way you will not be disappointed.
The upgrading menu can be very daunting due to it not being clearly set out, for example, if you pick to upgrade your engine, the screen will only show you one part on the engine bay, but if you click the R2 button this will then take you through each individual engine part in order to fully upgrade the entire engine. Each and every car you purchase or unlock through races, will handle differently and the upgrade menu will slightly adjust, which just makes Shift 2 generally more addictive.
However the game play is very impressive and the stages are all well laid out with plenty of hairpins to spin you out and also some very nice straights to where you can see the full potential of your car. Computer generated racers can seem to be problematic but if you keep out of their way you will be fine. They don’t seem to follow driving lines and treat their cars as battering rams, even the slightest bit of contact will send you careering off the track or spinning out while they carry on nicely as if nothing has happened. When you crash, the screen goes blurred with the impact and the driver gives you a slight grunt as if being injured but you’re soon enough back on the track catching them up. If you think changing the difficulty mode to easy will be better for you to handle the challenge then think again.
Shift 2 is slightly different from the other Need for Speed Titles, the game starts with a test lap and then applies some settings for you based on your performance., These settings may be altered while playing through the game once you get familiar with the it, some assists are; driving line, auto brake and auto speed adjuster. If you are well experienced to the game you could try manual with all the assists off and this will give you a serious challenge. There is about a hundred or so cars ranging from the most underpowered to the highest spec model out there, you will also get to drive some exotic cars in special stages as you progress though the game.
The all-new auto log, which appears in the game automatically compares your times with your online friends who are playing the game., When you post a new record. everyone on your auto log will be notified., This is one way in which it creates an open competition between yourself and friends.
