After more than four years of development, The Blood of Dawnwalker has finally arrived. Rebel Wolves and Bandai Namco Entertainment have released the dark fantasy open-world action RPG today on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, inviting players into the brutal world of Vale Sangora.
And this isn’t your usual vampire power fantasy.
At the heart of The Blood of Dawnwalker is Coen, a young man caught between two worlds. During the day, he remains human. When night falls, he becomes a vampire. Neither side of his existence is simply a bonus, however, with both forms bringing their own strengths, weaknesses and ways of approaching the world.
More importantly, every decision matters. Who Coen helps, what secrets he uncovers and how he chooses to use his newfound abilities can shape his story and ultimately determine what happens to the people around him.
Welcome to Vale Sangora
The Blood of Dawnwalker takes players to the 14th-century Carpathian Mountains, where the world is already suffering from war and the Black Death. Humanity’s weakness provides the perfect opportunity for something far older and considerably more dangerous to emerge from the shadows.
Vampires are no longer content to hide.
They have seized their opportunity to claim the freedom and power they have been denied for centuries, while other creatures of the night begin to follow their lead. The legends that people once dismissed as stories are becoming reality, and history is about to take a very different turn.
Vale Sangora is therefore more than simply a backdrop for Coen’s adventure. It is a world being transformed around him, with settlements, wilderness, ancient ruins and dangerous creatures providing plenty of opportunities for exploration.
Coen Is Human by Day and Vampire by Night
The defining feature of The Blood of Dawnwalker is quite literally written into its protagonist.
Coen has been transformed into a Dawnwalker, leaving him permanently caught between humanity and the supernatural. During daylight hours, players can rely on his human abilities, weapons and magical powers. When darkness arrives, Coen can embrace his vampiric side and unleash supernatural abilities that dramatically change how he approaches combat and exploration.
That day-and-night cycle isn’t simply there to make the world look pretty.
The transformation changes what Coen can do and forces players to adapt their approach depending on the time of day. One moment you might be fighting with a sword and magic, while later you could be tearing through enemies with vampiric abilities.
It also creates an interesting question for Coen: how much of himself is he willing to sacrifice to save the people he loves?
A Story Shaped by Your Choices
Rebel Wolves has built The Blood of Dawnwalker around the idea that players should be able to shape their own story rather than simply following a predetermined path from one quest marker to another.
Coen’s primary motivation is protecting his family, but achieving that goal isn’t necessarily going to mean making the morally correct decision every time.
The world is filled with secrets, fragile alliances and people who may need your help. You won’t necessarily have the time or ability to save everyone, meaning players will have to decide where their priorities lie.
Do you protect your humanity?
Do you embrace the powers you’ve been given?
Or do you decide that saving your family is worth becoming something you once feared?
Those choices are central to the experience and are intended to make each player’s journey through Vale Sangora feel personal.
An Open World Built for Exploration
Beyond the main story, The Blood of Dawnwalker offers a handcrafted open world to explore across the Carpathian-inspired region of Vale Sangora.
Players can venture through dense forests, sprawling plains, dangerous swamps, towering mountains and medieval settlements. Hidden ruins and remnants of ancient civilisations also provide opportunities to uncover secrets buried beneath the region’s already troubled history.
And naturally, given that this is a vampire story, some of those secrets are probably better left buried.
The world is designed around exploration and discovery rather than simply ticking objectives off a map. What players uncover can feed back into the wider narrative, making exploration another way of influencing Coen’s story.
Unreal Engine 5 Powers Rebel Wolves’ First Game
The Blood of Dawnwalker is the debut title from Rebel Wolves, a studio formed by developers with a background in major RPG development and a desire to create something of their own.
The game has been developed using Unreal Engine 5, providing the technological foundation for its dark fantasy world, characters and environments.
For a first game from a new studio, the ambition is certainly considerable. Rather than starting small, Rebel Wolves has gone straight for a single-player open-world RPG built around narrative choice, exploration and a gameplay system that changes depending on whether Coen is embracing his human or vampiric nature.
The Blood of Dawnwalker Is Available Now
The Blood of Dawnwalker is available now on:
- PC
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X|S
The launch is also accompanied by a major Day One patch, designed to further polish the experience as players begin their journey through Vale Sangora.
IGC Take: Being a Vampire Has Never Looked This Complicated
There is something immediately appealing about The Blood of Dawnwalker. We’ve had plenty of vampire games, plenty of open-world RPGs and more than enough games where our protagonist mysteriously acquires some ridiculous superpower five minutes into the story.
What makes this one interesting is that Rebel Wolves is tying the vampire transformation directly into the identity of its protagonist and the way the player experiences the world.
Coen isn’t simply a human who happens to have vampire powers. He’s stuck between two identities, and both come with consequences.
That’s a bloody good foundation for an RPG.
The idea of a day-and-night cycle actually changing how you play rather than simply turning the sky from blue to black is particularly interesting. During the day you’re working with Coen’s human abilities, while darkness opens the door to his supernatural side. That gives the world a natural rhythm and, potentially, some genuinely interesting tactical decisions.
Then you’ve got the story. The Blood of Dawnwalker isn’t promising that you can simply wander around saving everyone and becoming the universally adored hero. Sometimes you’ll have to choose who matters most, what risks you’re willing to take and how much of Coen’s humanity you’re prepared to sacrifice.
And let’s be honest, that sounds considerably more interesting than another RPG where we’re apparently the chosen one destined to collect twelve magic stones because nobody else could be bothered.
The Blood of Dawnwalker is now in players’ hands. This is the first game from Rebel Wolves, the beginning of what the studio describes as a new RPG saga, and potentially the start of something very interesting for fans of dark fantasy adventures.
Now excuse us while we go and find out just how badly Coen’s life can go when someone gives us a dialogue choice and a vampire transformation.
